February 25, 2010

Hello Everybody,

1 This brings the latest updates etc on our Web Site done on February 22 & 23, 2010 - http://www.stcg62group.org/index.htm

2. The Annual Re- Union Celebration of Old Boys & the AGM of the STC Guru OBA took place during the weekend February 19-21st 2010. On entry each Old Boy was handed over a Note of Welcome from the Headmaster. A new Code of Conduct had been introduced this year, and the Headmaster solicited the support and co-operation of all Old Boys in conforming to the guidelines laid down. A Wrist Band was issued to all Old Boys at the point of entry, so that "Strangers" and "Gate Crashers" could be denied entry. Only members of the OBA were permitted entry. A sum of Rs.2000/- was levied against the Food & other incidental expenses to be incurred by the College, and towards an exgratia payment for the support staff. This innovative procedure proved very effective. A total of 179 Old Boys participated this year. 96 members had arrived in time for dinner on Friday. By Breakfast time Saturday, 133 had registered, and for lunch on Saturday the numbers swelled to 172. 151 Members attended the AGM of the OBA. In the Cricket Match between Old Boys and Present Boys the Old Boys won the toss. Having been put in to bat, the present boys were all out for 170 runs. In their allotted 20 Overs, the Old Boys could reply with only 149 runs and were all out in the 17th over.

Trophies were awarded as follows: W A N Silva of the Present Boys for Best Batsman & Best Bowler; Rameeshan of the Old Boys for Best Batsman; Dasmal Liyanage of the Old Boys for Best Bowler; W A N Silva of the Present Boys for Man of the Match. The Basket Ball match was won by the Old Boys 28:26. In Swimming the Old Boys won the Medley Relay against the Present Boys. In the Volley Ball match 02 games were won by the Old Boys and one by the Support Staff. Whilst the Service was going on in the College Chapel the planting of a 100 fruit trees with the idea of reviving the Orchard,( which was the dream of Mrs.Mary Hayman on her last visit to College), was taking place. The Fellowship and the Formal Dinner took place as usual with a live band providing the music.

The Education Faculty Committee led by Wansapriya Gunaseela spearheaded a Project strongly supported by Senior Vice President Prabhath Jayasundara for the supply to College of a Multi- Media Projector with the Screen. They also donated 15 White Boards with a large stock of Marker Pens and Ink for use in the Class Rooms. Upali Jayatilaka, a Mount Thomian donated 06 Paintings for the Headmaster's Office. These presentations were made on Saturday morning.

The presence on the Campus of about 75 Boys and Girls during the Re-Union Celebrations to witness the Cricket Match, the Swimming Meet, the Basket Ball and Volley Ball Matches added colour and a sense of normalcy to all these events and proceedings taking place, as in the good old days of the Hayman era, unlike what has been happening in the last 02 decades when almost the entire Boarding was given a more or less compulsory Mid Term holiday, and the Old Boys moved in to the Guru Campus which had taken a Ghost Town atmosphere sans the Boys who infused life to the place. Special mention must be made of the Refurbishment of the Swimming Pool now available with clean water for swimming which added lustre to the entrance of the College. Once the Tiling, Lighting, Diving Boards and Landscaping are completed the Pool and its environs would greatly enhance the beauty and value of the School.

At the AGM the following were elected Office Bearers without a contest. Senior Vice President– Christo Gonawela; Vice Presidents- Nihal Wanniarachchi, Krishantha Weerawardena, M.Thirumurugamoorthy; Secretary - Milinda Hettiarachchi; Treasurer -S. Rajmohan; Assistant Secretary-A D Sandakelum; and Assistant Treasurer -Thanura Fernando.

The Headmaster and his Staff together with the OBA Ex-Co and Organising Committee for the Re- Union celebrations had blended well and co-ordinated superbly to put in place a well prepared Programme to make the Event an outstanding success. The New Code of Conduct as well as the production of the Membership Card compulsory to gain entry also went a long way to enable a smooth and trouble free Celebration. The quality of the food and service was exceptionally good and received the approbation of all participants. In short all Old Boys participating were full of praise for the Chief Architect and the Man Behind the Scene- Headmaster, Fr. Marc Billimoria.

3. The Headmaster had written previously to Old Boys with regard to development work etc at Guru. Those who attended the Re-Union Celebrations could see for themselves the improvements effected since he took over. One could sense a note of expectancy in the air. Many Old Boys who had previously written off Guru as a lost cause have rallied round the energetic Headmaster, who could be said, is moving heaven and earth towards the revival of Guru. A well prepared Report was presented by the Headmaster to the Old Boys at the AGM, which was well received. Perhaps in continuation of this same spirit and sense of urgency a High Powered, Energetic, Efficient and Dynamic Leadership to the Ex-Co was elected to Office to lend muscle and support the Headmaster to the hilt.

4. We suggest that Old Boys interested in continuing to assist Guru contact the Headmaster with their Offers of Support.

5.The Uva Thomian Big Match will be on March 27, 2010 at the Bandarawela Esplanade.

6. The Guru Prize Giving will be on May 26, 2010 and the Chief Guest would be, Warden STC Mount, Rev. John Puddefoot.

7.The 131st Battle of the Blues (Royal-Thomian 03 Day Cricket Match) is due to be played on March 11, 12, & 13, 2010. The 35th Limited Overs Royal – Thomian Cricket Match is due to be played on March 20, 2010. The Venue for both Matches will be the S. S. C.

Please feel free to forward this and future Circular E-mails to any other Old Thomians and Well Wishers who may be interested in receiving same.

9. The Headmaster has written to Old Boys with regard to development work etc at Guru on the following lines:-

Dear Old Thomian,

STC GURUTALAWA INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Warm greetings from Guru.

I have decided to write to you as I know many of you old boys of STC at Gurutalawa and indeed of

STC at Mount Lavinia are not aware of the steps that have been taken to raise standards here at the

unique campus of S. Thomas' College in the hills of Uva. Despite continued limitations we are

taking one step at a time to pursue the goals and ideals that made this great school what it was and

can be again.

Since January 2007 there have been many improvements effected that have enhanced the quality of

life for those who live here as students or staff and undoubtedly contributed to the continual raising

of standards at Guru. For your information I am including below a list of the major items of our

Infrastructure Development Programme that we have attended to during the period up to December

2009 to improve the infrastructure and facilities we offer Guru Thomians.

I have deliberately not referred to the improvement of standards in other spheres of life at Guru

about which I have elaborated in my Prize Day Reports and annual Report at the STCG OBA

AGMs of 2008 & 2009. Needless to say there have been considerable strides taken.

With funds contributed by the Bishop, Board of Governors, Old Boys and Friends of Guru.

1. The Water Problem that plagued the school in the past has been solved to a great extent by

the restoration of unused storage tanks and the utilization of the deep well and other wells

on the campus.

2. The kitchen, dining room and toilets of the Headmaster's Bungalow were renovated.

3. The Chaplain's Rooms adjoining the Chapel and occupied by Revd H. C. Goodchild were

provided with a brand new toilet and bathroom.

4. Brand new Night Toilets with up to date facilities were installed in all the dormitories [other

than the former Winchester (now Hayman Junior) by the Basket Ball Court, Illangakoon

near the Sick Room (part of the old Dining Hall) and Jayasinghe by the Stores] with the help

and support of the OBAs in the UK, Australia and Sri Lanka.

5. A brand new set of day toilets and wash rooms for the Junior Dormitories were opened in

2008 thanks to the efforts of the STCG OBA in its 50th anniversary year.

6. The roof of Read Junior was given extensive repairs although only the timber could be

replaced due to the cost.

7. The Davidson Dormitory by the Headmaster's Bungalow was restored and rewired and is

now being used to house the aesthetic subjects, agriculture and practical technical skills

classrooms.

8. A model classroom was renovated and furnished in the Middle School by an old boy.

9. The former Chummery that was in a state of dilapidation and on the verge of being

demolished was converted into the stables for the four horses donated by Mr. Jacques

Huyghebaert who functioned as Advisor on the revival of Guru and overlooked the

infrastructure development programme in 2007 & 2008.

10. The drainage system of the Keble & Blanchard dormitories was completely replaced.

11. An entirely new set of toilets and wash rooms was erected for the Blanchard Dormitory for

Girls at Keble by Ladies' College, Colombo.

12. The Staff Quarters allotted to Mr V. W. Dikkumbura was restored with funds provided by an

old boy.

13. New school-time toilets were built for the girls and boys of the Middle and Upper School

and for the main Staff Room in the Upper School by Brandix.

14. The College Office was computerised and networked with funds from an old boy.

15. Two Dialog TV connections were provided for the students by an old boy and a parent.

16. The 'Isolation Room' of the Sick Room that was once the home of Dr and Mrs Hayman has

been given a new look and now serves as the College Guest Room that can be booked by

old boys, parents and others for short stays.

17. 5 brand new Computers were purchased for the IT Unit with funds from the OBA in Canada.

18. 50 new desks and chairs were provided through funds from the OBA in California.

19. Iron Bunk Beds were provided by an old boy in Australia through the STCG OBA.

20. The College Bakery was recommissioned and a dough mixer was donated to the bakery by

an old boy through the STCG OBA.

21. A multi chopper was donated by an old boy for the purpose of making our own compost etc

out of our large amounts of waste available on the campus.

22. A new sound system, vestments, altar linen, hangings, hymn books and bibles were provided

for the Chapel by an old boy.

With Funds from Sherborne School (Dr R. L. Hayman's alma mater in the UK)

23. Pavements and drains were constructed for the Keble dormitory block, the Keble

classrooms, the main Dining Hall, the Middle School and Upper School classroom blocks.

24. A new Chummery for single male staff was opened below the Simon Perera Block of

Classrooms and houses 6 to 8 single male staff.

25. The entire roof of the Upper School block was replaced with new timber and asbestos sheets.

26. The Middle School classrooms were renovated.

27. A platform was erected in the Dining Hall for the High Table on the lines of the old Dining

Hall.

28. A dining room was put up in the space between the kitchen and squash court for the Support.

Staff to have their meals and an Office Room for the Food Warden was put up in the Pantry.

29. A ceiling was installed for the entire Office Section while the Exam Room was enlarged.

30. A Duplo Machine and Computer were purchased for the purpose of Examination work.

31. The roof of the Lower School classroom block was repaired and replaced where necessary.

32. The roof of the Keble Dormitory was repaired and repainted.

At present there are three major projects for which I am trying to raise funds as priorities.

1. The upgrading and renovation of the Swimming Pool – Phase 1 is almost over at a cost of 2

million rupees donated by three or four old boys. Phase 2 requires at least 1.8 million to 2

million. Once completed the Guru Pool will not only have a new look, but as the only pool

in the area will be able to generate an income for maintenance etc.

2. Urgent repairs to the Headmaster's Van and College Van that will cost approximately Rs

250,000/- per vehicle.

3. The upgrading of the IT Unit with Broadband, new computers et al – Rs 510,000/-

The long term wish list includes the following:

1. Replacing of the roofs of the remaining Junior Dormitories

2. New day toilets for the Senior Dormitories and the Primary Dormitories on par with those of

the Junior Dormitories.

3. Renovation of single staff accommodation for lady teachers at Keble

4. Repairs to and renovations of the various bungalows and quarters for married staff

5. Renovation of the College Hall

6. More double (bunk) beds for the dormitories

7. More desks and chairs for the classrooms

8. Repainting of the Chapel and polishing of the Chapel furnishings in time for the 65th

anniversary of the Chapel in December.

9. Upgrading of all classrooms with a large white board, shelves and a cupboard for each class.

These are projects that may be taken up by individual old boys or Class Groups. Should you feel

inclined to support your alma mater and join with us in the raising of standards over the next two

years, please contact me to find out how you can be of help or how you could send a donation for

the projects identified as priorities for this year. Be assured that donations received will be

utilised only for the purpose for which they are made and all donations will be duly acknowledged

and receipted.

“Our College has not reared us without expecting from us in return some nurture fee. She has given

us nurture in order that she might engage for herself our best energies and talent, permitting us to

use for our needs so much and so much only as she does not require for her own. The College needs

your help to survive. Every Old Boy must give the College the nurture fee he owes.”

[Warden Neville de Alwis to the Old Boys of STC ML, 1984]

Gurutalawians, you owe Guru a nurture fee and I look forward to your collaboration and solidarity.

ESTO PERPETUA!

Dear Fellow Thomian,

1. I write to you once again with the latest updates etc, on our Web Site.

2. The Ex-Co of the STCG-OBA had a Meeting on September 26, 2009. Images have been uploaded in the link “Gallery of Events”. - http://www.stcg62group.org/GE_Exco_Meeting_Sept_2009.htm

3. At the above meeting a Letter of Resignation (due to urgent personal commitments in the UK) was tabled from Mr. Mahen Ranasinghe, the Lively- Go-Getter-Work-Horse, Senior Vice- President of the STCG-OBA. All those who were regularly in touch with Guru will recall that, we witnessed an unprecedented era of development activity, in which the OBA played a pro-active role in complete harmony with Headmaster Rev. Marc Billimoria during Mahen’s stewardship.

4. At the same meeting, Vice-President Prabhath Jayasundera was elected as Mahen’s Successor. Prabhath was Head Prefect in College in 1985 during the Headmastership of Mr. Patrick Gunewardena. The Roll of Students during this period reached an all time high of 1247 resulting in the Board of Governors crying halt. Guru witnessed success in every sphere of activity during this era. Prabhath is a worthy successor to Mahen. If his period of Head Prefectship and the 06 weeks which have already elapsed of his tenure as Senior Vice President is considered a yardstick, then both the OBA and Guru can look forward to a very Productive, Committed and Responsible Leadership from Prabhath. Our Good Wishes are extended to this worthy Product of Guru.

5. A Mega Development Plan is afoot in relation to the Swimming Pool. Headmaster Rev. Marc Billimoria together with the OBA are putting the final touches to the Paper Work and Fund Raising Activities.

6. At this point of time it may be relevant to note an In-depth Article in relation to the Swimming pool written by no less a person than Dr. R.L. Hayman, the Donor of the pool and which appeared in the September 1953 issue of the College Magazine. This is reproduced and placed in the link “Articles”. http://www.stcg62group.org/PDF/Articles/54_Swimming_Pool_at_Gurut.pdf

Dear Fellow Thomian,

I write to you once again with the latest updates done on our web site yesterday, August 06, 2009.

We have updated the Link News of Old Boys http://www.stcg62group.org/PDF/News_of_Old_Boys_July_2009.pdf

We have also updated the Link Contact details of Old Boys http://www.stcg62group.org/Noticeboard.htm

Copies of the emails sent to those on our mailing list have been placed in the Link News Letters & Circulars. http://www.stcg62group.org/circulars.htm

Guru Closes for the August Vacation today. The postponed Swimming Meet has been re fixed for September 18, 2009 – which is also Open Day for parents to meet the teachers re the progress reports of their children.

The College web site, now under the administration of the Headmaster is progressing reasonably well. A new Link has been established for The Farm, which was in existence before the school moved in. It would be nostalgic for Old Boys of those vintage years and up to the 1960's who were lucky to be boarders at that time, when The Farm consisted of inter alia sheep; cattle; that massive stud bull (who had an argument with the Bursar's small car & punched holes in it); that Orchard inclusive of Persimmon; Loquat; and other rare fruit trees to go down memory lane and view what is left to be seen now. Some of these images have been made available in the Links relating to The Farm and Our Campus. The Horses who formed part of The Farm are now a part of the Riding Club. Images relating to the Horses grazing & being exercised in the Riding Ring, participating in Ceremonies connected with welcoming The Chief Guests at Prize Giving’s and Sports Meets etc. are novel features strikingly obvious in this unique Up Country Boarding School. Fr. Marc Billimoria, the Headmaster at Gurutalawa, who is a Mount Thomian himself, strongly believes that Guru has a Character of its own. He pays much attention to Thomian Traditions and is making every effort to restore at Gurutalawa at least what is humanly possible in these difficult times. We Salute him.

Please inform us in the event of a change in your Contact Details. Please also inform us the Contact Details of any of your friends who would like to be on our Mailing List, inter alia to be kept informed of Guru News and Developments etc.

Your comments and observations are most welcome.

Warm Regards,

July 16, 2009

Dear Fellow Thomian,

I write to you once again with the latest (July 07, 10 & 14 2009) updates on our website.

The most important item of news that would interest all Old Boys is that the Official Web Site of the College has been revived since end of June 2009 and is now administered by the Headmaster at Gurutalawa. Already over 10 updates have been done. Regular updates are ongoing. Please visit the site http://www.stcguru.com

An extract of the speech of Mr. P S Duleepkumar -a pioneer Old boy of Guru, as the Chief Guest at a Guru Prize Giving in August 1977 on the subject “The Thomian Tradition" has been up-loaded under the link-"Articles". http://www.stcg62group.org/PDF/Articles/45_The_Thomian_Tradition_by_Duleep_Kumar.pdf

Also uploaded under the same link is an interview given by the Headmaster Rev. Marc Billimoria to Wijith de Chickera and which appeared in the Ceylon Churchman April – June 2009 http://www.stcg62group.org/PDF/Articles/46_STC_Guru_Uniquely_Thomian.pdf

The S. Thomas’ College Bandarawela OBA has its 22nd Annual General Meeting on August 15, 2009 at the Keble Memorial Hall at Bandarawela. Those of our vintage would find it Rewarding and Nostalgic to go down Memory Lane by visiting the school particularly during the Old Boy's Re-Union week-end. http://www.stcg62group.org/index.htm

The Thomian Society of Colombo have organised a Dinner Theater on July 25 2009, at the Galadari Hotel Ball Room. " Koluu' and "Indu" are billed to perform.

The Guru Inter-House Swimming Meet is schedule for the morning of August 07, 2009. School closes for the August vacation, the same day.

The New Warden at STC Mount Lavinia Rev. John Puddefoot assumed duties on July 01, 2009. On July 2nd College had a Special Assembly in the morning to introduce the new Warden to the students. The Board of Governors were present. The Bishop of Colombo Rt Rev Duleep De Chickera in his speech introduced the new Warden as Rev. John. He went on to explain that Thomians were quite adept at giving nick names and therefore he will avoid using the surname of the new Warden to introduce him. In fact, he mentioned that he had been honoured with no less than 03 nicknames whilst he was in College as Sub Warden; he was aware of only 02 of the nicknames whilst he was in College. A Tri lingual Service of Induction was held on July 10, 2009, at the Chapel of the Transfiguration in Mount Lavinia, presided over by the Bishop who is also the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the College. Two unexpected and surprise participants were H.E. The President and the First Lady.

Special mention must be made of the valuable contribution made by Hon. Prof G.L.Peiris, one of the illustrious sons of S.T.C and a member of the Board of Governors who personally obtained the recommendation of the President for a five year visa for the New Warden and ensured that it was obtained.

Direct Links for matters relating to STC Mount Lavinia have been provided as follows on the Home Page:-

The post of Manager Administration at Guru has been filled. Ananda Gallearachchi who is a regular and popular personality in all events not only at Guru but also at STC Bandarawela has been selected by the Board of Governors. He assumed duties on July 01, 2009. With the experience he has gained Managing State & Private Sector Plantations and also in the Mercantile Sector, it is hoped that he will be a great source of strength and support to Headmaster Rev. Marc Billimoria at Guru. We wish him well. According to the Headmaster, Ananda has already taken a great load off the shoulders of the Headmaster.

Dr R L Hayman's Vision for Guru -Gordonstoun School - http://www.gordonstoun.org.uk/

Most Thomian Web Sites Worldwide have provided a Link to our Web Site.

We have provided a link to Eton College in UK considered as the Mother School of S.Thomas' .

We have also provided a link to Gordonstoun School in Moray, Scotland - a Public School with special emphasis on outdoor life and inculcation of the spirit of adventure - the vision which Dr.Hayman had for Guru.

Apart from these two we have also set apart a link for Sherborne School in UK,Dr Hayman's Alma Mater with which Fr Marc Billimoria, the Headmaster at Guru proposes to build up a close relationship.

We have on April 09, 2009 placed the following material on the site:-

1. An update from the Headmaster at Gurutalawa regarding the results of the GCE O/L Examination. http://www.stcg62group.org/index.htm

2. The latest Contact Details of 204 Old Boys (and Well wishers ) on our Mailing List. http://www.stcg62group.org/Noticeboard.htm

3. Contact Details of Members of the STCG OBA New Ex-Co for 2009 / 2010. http://www.stcg62group.org/PDF/OBA/New_Ex-Co_2009_2010.pdf

4. An Article "Thomians Age Better in NSW, Australia" written by Darell Liversz (who captained Royal in 1969) on the Royal Thomian Cricket Match played at the Thornton Oval. Our own Ana Amaranath (Formerly A A De Silva) Captained the Thomian Team. Our 1962 contemporaries at Guru & thereafter at Mount will recall that Ana was a Total All- Rounder who excelled in every conceivable Sports activity & Academia. He was a much respected College Prefect in Dr Hayman's last completed year.He continues to dazzle & bring credit to his Alma Mater & Sri Lanka.Having completed his Law Degree and taken his Oath as an Attorney at Law he joined the Attorney General's Department where he made his mark.He later joined the State Prosecution Department in Seychelles and thereafter a similar capacity in NSW Australia. He is held in high regard in Society, and apart from leading the STC OBA was also a prominent figure in the Sri Lankan Association Down Under. http://www.stcg62group.org/PDF/Articles/42_Thomians_Age_Better_in_NSW.pdf

I would also like to make use of this communication to convey some news, particularly to all our 1962 contemporaries in College as well as all Thomians, relating to our very own Sunil Watawala. He has launched his campaign for the post of International Director in Lions Clubs International.Sunil was the Head Prefect in 1962, our final year at Guru and was reported to have been held in high esteem by Dr Hayman. He Captained the Uva Schools Hockey Team at the Nationals and the First Team from Guru to play Overseas. He was the Secretary of the Guru OBA from 1978 – 1981 and a Vice President from 2002 to 2005.He Chaired the Organizing Committee of the Guru OBA Dinner Dance in November 2002, which was a Mega Event and a phenomenal success. He has proven leadership skills. He Chaired the Committee of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of Lionism in Sri Lanka having been a member of the Lion’s Club of Negombo since 1969; has achieved 100% attendance for 37 years!!! He is the only Lion to have served as Cabinet Secretary for two successive terms. He built a Cancer Ward at Batticaloa General Hospital with Korean assistance. He also built a Lion’s village with 25 houses for the poor with assistance from Norway. He was recognized by the Government as the most outstanding D/C Miller in Sri Lanka in 1982 , 1985 ,and 1986. He is the recipient of the “Most Outstanding Citizen Award” for his contribution to Community Welfare and Development in the field of Industrial & Business Management at the Annual District Convention of Lion District 306A. Sunil has truly distinguished himself as an old Guru Thomian and brought credit and lustre to us all.

Ana and Sunil are but Two of that Galaxy of Thomians of whom not only Dr Hayman but all of us of that Golden Era can be justly proud of, for having projected Guru not only as the Best and Most Sought After School in Sri Lanka but arguably in the entirety of South East Asia.

We would be happy to receive News of Old boys, particularly those of our vintage.Every now and then one of them makes contact with us, even after 46 long years, generally thanks to this Web Site. This includes the few surviving members of the staff.Mr George Pillai and Mr N Ratnasingham being two of the latter category.Mr Nimal Bhareti and Mr LM Fernando of the staff continue to keep in touch with us.

Please inform us in the event of a change in your contact details. Please also inform us the contact details of any of your friends who would like to be on our Mailing List, inter alia to be kept informed of Guru News and Developments etc.

Your comments and observations are most welcome.

Warm Regards,

Incidentally we would like to point out that our site is that belonging to the Most Senior group/class of Old Thomians i.e those that left Guru at the end of 1962 and who commenced their schooling/education at S.Thomas's Prep School in Bandarawela or Kollupitiya in 1952 in the Keble era. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE CAN BE PROUD OF.

The Worldwide Calendar of Events continues to be updated regularly to keep Thomians Near and Far informed of Thomian Functions and Events all over the world. We continue to receive information from the Branches at Bandarawela, Gurutalawa, Australia, United Kingdom and Canada about their respective Events. It is our hope that the cordial relations we maintain with the Administrators and Webmasters of the various Thomian sites will assist in maintaining the Hallowed Traditions of S.Thomas' and will continue to foster same between the various branches of the school and the Associations of their Alumni flung all over the world and also assist in the maintenance and renewal of friendships amongst Old Boys which originated in their school days. We are aware of the far reaching effect this has had on the Old Boys of Guru who continue to renew friendships even after more than 45 years.

We have at the Uploading done last evening placed an Article "Golden Jubilee Celebrations of S.Thomas’ College Gurutalawa OBA - THE SCHOOL IN THE HILLS" . written by Gerald de Alwis and which appeared in the Sunday Times Plus of February 22,2009, http://www.stcg62group.org/PDF/Articles/40_Golden_Jubilee_Celebrations_STCG_OBA.pdf

This February marks the 50th Anniversary of the inauguration of the OBA at Gurutalawa. We have learnt that Old Boys residing in other countries have arranged to make the Pilgrimage to Guru at the end of February, and that amongst the large number expected are some of the Old Boys of the Pioneer Group of 1942. The Headmaster Rev. Marc Billimoria who is the President of the STCG OBA together with the Ex- Co led by the indefatigable Senior Vice President Mahen Ranasinghe are making every effort to make this year's Celebrations very special. They deserve to be so.

If the manner in which the Headmaster has tried to steer the Ship of Guru out of Troubled Waters is any indication of his capacity for innovative solutions, those visiting Gurutalawa are sure to find great satisfaction, and consolation that Guru is in safe hands.

A Project to build New Toilets for the Junior Dorms was undertaken by the OBA led by its tireless Senior Vice President Mahen Ranasinghe.

New Events which have been placed on the Calendar are the 130th Royal Thomian Celebration Dinner at the Box Hill Town Hall on February 27, 2009 from 7.30 p.m. to 1.00 a.m. ; the AGM at the Mount Waverly Youth Centre on February 28, 2009 from 6.45 p.m. onwards and the Royal Thomian (over 40's) Twenty 20 Cricket Match on March 01, 2009 at 9.30 a.m and the Open Twenty 20 Cricket Match at 1.00 p.m. (both matches at the Mulgrave Cricket Club). All these Events are of the STC OBA in Victoria, Australia. http://www.stcg62group.org/index.htm

The Headmaster at Gurutalawa, Rev. Marc Billimoria has arranged a Thanksgiving Service at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday March 07 2009, at the Chapel of the Transfiguration at STC Mount Lavinia, followed by Fellowship and The Launching of The Hayman Foundation, with the Funds received from Mrs. Hayman's Will, for Infrastructure Development, Staff Welfare and Scholarships. These three events are in Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the STCG OBA. - http://www.stcg62group.org/index.htm

A New Site of Old Thomians in the United Kingdom has been created. i.e http://www.otauk.org/ Our site has been provided a link therein. We have reciprocated.

The link we had hitherto for Old Thomians in Australia has been removed. In place thereof have been included the following links for Old Thomians in New South Wales http://www.stcobasydney.com/ and in Victoria http://www.stcobaaust.org.au/.

Most Thomian Web Sites Worldwide have provided a Link to our Web Site.

The Notice / Agenda of the AGM, the Programme of Events at this Special Re-Union Celebrations, http://www.stcg62group.org/PDF/STCG_OBA_AGM_and_Reunion_2009.pdf and the Secretary's report http://www.stcg62group.org/PDF/OBA/AGM_Minutes/50th_AGM_Secretarys_Report_2009.pdf (an Advance Draft Copy) to be tabled at this AGM have been placed on the site.

Minutes of the last Ex-Co Meeting of the Guru OBA held on November 29, 2008 have as usual been uploaded.

http://www.stcg62group.org/PDF/OBA/Ex_Co_Minutes/34_Ex_co_Mts_29_11_08.pdf

The draft Minutes of the last AGM in February 2008 which have been circulated and are to be adopted at the next AGM on February 28,2009 have also been uploaded.

http://www.stcg62group.org/PDF/OBA/AGM_Minutes/49th_AGM_Minutes_2008.pdf

We placed a Presentation of the progress of the Project on our site a few weeks ago. The Project has been completed in record time and at a cost below that which was estimated. A further Presentation of the finished product together with the images of the Opening and Handing over have also been placed on the site. August 22, 2008
Dear Lakshman,

Many thanks for your e-mail re your website, etc., plus your request for "comments and observations". I also received an e-mail this morning from my old friend Peter Weerakoon, who is Editor of the STC (Australia) Newsletter.

It is encouaging to know that you (and a few others!) are asking questions and finally getting some positive answers from the apparently crippled hierarchy that was/is responsible for running STC Gurutalawa.

As an old boy ('48-51) during the Hayman-Foster era, it is sad to observe the decline of this wonderful institution, which had such a positive impact on many of us. In fact, I visited STC Guru about ten years ago and was most disappointed with what I observed and experienced. The apparent nonchalance, indifference and downright ignorance about past history and the people who helped mould this institution, indicated to me a total disinterest in the organization for which they worked. It was just a job--NOT a vocation.

For example, when Dr. Hayman funded the construction of the swimming pool, it was the student body named the "Turf Club"(!) that helped landscape the area below the Chapel. We brought in pieces of sod from surrounding areas and tamped them onto the steep embankments around the pool, in order to prevent erosion.

We also helped level parts of the cricket pitch/games field. At that time we did not realize how these extra curricular activities became a part of our education. Other examples were the Scout Troop (Dr. Hayman), Life Guard certification (Dr. Hayman), Junior and Senior Cadets (Capt. Lucian Amerasinghe and Lt. A.M.S. Abeywardene--who was also House Master of deSaram House). We even marched from STCG to Diyatalawa under the watchful but critical eye of AMSA! That unofficial march followed by an extensive .303 rifle practice almost decimated our cadet battallion!

Among others, the Rifle Club (AMSA), building projects like small dams, which helped us understand the fundamentals of hydroelectric power (Dr. H.), Hiking Club (Dr. Hayman and Mr. A.R.W. Tennekoon), Farm Club (Mr. Peglar--a Welshman), Woodwork and Music (Mr. and Mrs. Scott), obstacle course (Dr. Hayman, Mr. Scott)--just to name a few!

Almost forgot! On Friday nights after dinner, Dr. Hayman would show us movies, plus his excellent movies of his trips around Ceylon emphasizing the important historical significance of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, etc. He would also show us movies of old boys and their achievements, on and off the sports arena--an unwitting indoctrination of the so-called "Thomian spirit," that embraced the vaues of hard work, fair play and above all, esprit de corps.

The emphasis was teamwork and not the ego--even though the ego was constantly being challenged academically and athletically. Strict discipline was the key to this success.

We just did not realize at that time how very lucky we were to be exposed to the collective genius of people like Rev. Foster and Dr. Hayman--both intellectual and physical giants--A.K. Chapman, Lucien Amerasinghe, A.M.S. Abeywardena, Rev. Elliot and his wife (for a short while), Mr. Scott and his wife (also for a short while), Richard Peglar--just to name a few.

These were people who dedicated their lives to educate and inspire young Ceylonese men, soon after Ceylon became an independent nation. After all, many of these young men would be the future leaders of the country--not only in politics, but in all facets of society. The results of their labor and optimism were not misplaced.

We were also exposed to some of the new "old boys" who returned to Gurutalawa to teach, for relatively short periods of time, i.e., before they went to university, etc. I recall the likes of Duleep Kumar (also our cricket coach--we even played Jaffna College in Jaffna, plus another trip to Batticaloa), Bradman Weerakoon (captained STC at cricket, Peter W. is his brother), John Habaragoda, and later on my classmate A.C.M. Laffir and John Marasinge (both Hayman acolytes!). Where are the Duleeps and Bradmans of today? The mere fact that I remember their contributions to the school, plus the positive impact they had on me, after almost sixty years, says it all.

I'd better stop now, before I get carried away! What we need at STC Guru is a dedicated staff. Also, we had no female teachers in our day, except for Mrs. Hayman--matron, and Mrs. Kularatne--tuck shop. Every male teacher was involved in after-school extracurricular activities with the students. Is that too much to ask in this day and age?

Before I conclude this unplanned diatribe (!) would you please be so good as to let me know how many old boys (still alive!) went to STC Kollupitiya, STC Bandarawela, STCG, and Mt. Lavinia? I am one of them--and was exposed to Mr. and Mrs. Keble, Mrs. Jaggers--matron, and of course Warden deSaram, C.H. Davidson, F.J. Senaratne, C.R. Wise, S.J. Anandanayagam, V.J. Hensman, Mr. Devadasan, and other pillars of the staff at STC. God Bless them all, and ESTO PERPETUA.

Kind regards,
Larry

September 11, 2008
Dear Larry,
First I must thank you for your e-mail of August 22 conveying your Comments and Observations. I know you are letting off steam. I have also done so many times on this subject.
Next I must apologies for the delay in responding, due to a host of reasons. One reason for the delay was the difficulty to gather my thoughts and ideas in to a brief response and to present same in a coherent manner.

The current situation at Guru and its Past, present a complex picture. Complex Firstly because conditions and the situation of the country have changed so much since the Hayman-Foster Era. Secondly because due to a chain reaction arising from the first and also independently of that, Guru itself has been through so many vicissitudes and changes mostly inevitable.

I note that you had visited Guru about 10 years ago. You have obviously not failed to notice these changes.

The feelings you express thereafter are shared by me, and by so many others of our era, and those who were at Guru before us and thereafter, for some time.

I was at Guru during 1958-1962. Having been at S.Thomas’ Prep School at Bandarawela from 1952- 1957 under Mr. Keble’s Headmastership. We had Hayman, Foster, Chapman, J De S Jayasinghe, Chinniah, F L Amarasinghe, Oliver De Soysa, L M Fernando, John Marasinghe, Laffir and others of the Hayman Army. You would have had to contend with an infrastructure of dorms, classrooms, sports facilities etc, slightly less appealing than what we had. Yet the quality of education , the standard of sports and discipline was good. The finished product that came out, I feel, was much more cultured and gentlemanly in outlook. It is a fact that in our time we did not have the comforts that students of today have. The classroom and dining hall furniture that is available now and the tiled toilets of today were then non-existent. But these are standard requirement of today when you compare other Schools and Home. Yet this did not prevent the production of Thomians in the mould you refer to by name by the hundred. Then what went wrong ?

Over the years of Stewardship of different Headmasters, (all of whom definitely made some positive contribution in different areas), the main fabric of the College, the Thomian Traditions and production of Men and Cultured Gentleman underwent a change. Inter-alia, the ‘socio-economic’ changes in the country; the neglect of English; over emphasis on Sinhala; the entry to the College of students from a totally different social background; deterioration in the quality of the Tutorial Staff brought about a marked difference. To compound the situation, during the last decade or so, delay, neglect and failure on the part of the student to pay their School Fees on time; the consequent problems in not having the means for the maintenance, upkeep improvement of the infrastructure; the funds necessary to pay salaries and wages; such that by numbers which had peeked at 1200 some years ago had come down to around 240 and kept going down.

Overdraft to the banks stood at millions and each month the deficit was around Rs.600, 000. It was not possible to go on. By December 2006 the Board decided to close down the school.

Other factors too had contributed to this malaise:-

1. STC Bandarawela started classes for students from standard 6 to O/ Level and A/ Level. Thus the intake from a Thomian branch school effectively dried up.
2. Guru was therefore forced to start classes from Standard 5 downwards to Kindergarten . Thus numbers had to be increased at Gurutalawa. Staff too had to be increased, but with inadequate facilities and infrastructure.
3. The standard and quality of Government Central Schools which were held in ridicule in our time improved by leaps and bounds. Their Tutorial Staff attracted the best teachers whose Salaries and Terms and Conditions of employment had improved hugely. Their infrastructure too improved. The State had the funds and pumped in more for Education which was their social responsibility. Their Scholarship Schemes and other benefits were very attractive. Their Sports and Extra Curricular activities improved vastly.
4. The International Schools then came on the scene offering an English education and Passport to Foreign Universities. Despite the fact that their fees were in excess of Rs. 100,000/- and Admission Fees of a similar amount, students who hitherto clamoured for Private Schools found an easy pathway. There was henceforth no need to fret in order to gain admission to much sought after Government Schools in the Metropolis and big cities. Those who could afford it, found themselves on a highway direct to foreign universities, diplomas and degrees to study and work abroad. Various institutes offered courses after the Ordinary Level and Advanced Level and for the first time these courses were made available in so many areas of disciplines. There was no need to be in a Private School and fight for a small quota to gain admission to local university. As time went by even students from very modest homes found these avenues very appealing. Naturally these Colleges and Institutes too attracted the better Tutors. They could afford to pay very handsome salaries. Their gain was the loss of the Private Schools.
5. Another phenomenon was the Tuition Mania. No student would want to forego same. It became a necessity. In our time we had no tutors at Guru. The class work was sufficient. Today Teachers in Private and Government Schools who teach for the Local and Foreign exams all earn loads of money giving Tuition after school. Their salaries from their regular employment are but a small fraction of their private earnings from Tuition. Even a student who does not need Tuition is made to feel inadequate unless fed with after school Tuition. At Guru Tuition from outside masters understandably is not possible. So it has come about that the favoured and much sought after Boarding House at STC Mt is virtually closed. On the other hand Guru has now reverted to a total Boarding School. Fees are to be increased from Rs. 7000 to Rs. 7,500 for Tuition and Boarding from January 2009. Compare these figures with the International Private Schools. Additional help will be from the existing Staff only and that too only if the persons concerned approve of same. These regulations may be laudable. Yet Guru has attracted students from single parent homes and with other disabilities and the overall picture is bleak.
6. The major part of the staff at Guru are Ladies. Being a Boy’s Boarding school with students going up to O Levels, Female teachers are not the best option. They are unable to take any of the Extra Curricular activities. Eg: Sports, Hiking, etc. These are part of Boarding School life. Furthermore the major part of the staff are Non Resident. This is a huge draw back. The Head master needs a strong support staff, particularly House Masters, resident in close proximity to the Boys Dorms and who are able to enforce discipline and students look up to. Dr. Frank Jayasinghe who took over as Headmaster from Dr. Hayman was the Chief Guest at the Guru Prize Giving this year. In his opening remarks he mentioned that he too had been a young man of similar age as the present Headmaster- Rev. Marc Billimoria when he took up the challenge at Guru. He went on to say “ but I was lucky because I had the support of a fine Staff to help me” . That statement says it all. It would appear the infrastructure and facilities is not as important as the quality of the Staff. Today the Headmaster is sadly saddled with all these deficiencies. Tennis, Boxing, Gymnastics, Life Saving, Social Service, Rifle Shooting, Cadetting, Wood Work, Outward Bound Course, Cross Country Runs, Hiking, Bird watching, have disappeared. The standard of other Sports has declined to such drastic levels as to be almost non existent. Years of neglect and failure to address the relevant issues by those concerned too have contributed to this situation. It is only now that the Bishop and the Board appear to have risen to the occasion. The OBA had been for a long time largely inactive in not highlighting this situation. Each of the Headmasters had their own priorities and agendas. They were not given proper guidance and some even misrepresented matters to the Board. The Academic staff and support staff were not helpful to the Headmasters. He could not run the place by himself. There was infighting amongst the staff. Consequently, corruption, petty theft, misappropriation of funds became the order of the day.
7. The Government Educational Policy; the changes in the socio economic situation; the Boom in the business called education etc etc plus the corresponding decline of standards at Guru all resulted in what Guru is now.
8. As regards the future it is difficult to say. Guru now has a fine Headmaster, perhaps one of the best after Dr Hayman. A Mount Thomian who is a Priest, and having a penchant for History. As at present his task is difficult. But his approach has been different and humane. He has very little help from the Academic staff, almost all of whom are from a different mould. Yet a few are backing him. He selects the Student Leaders carefully and they appear to be a great source of strength to him. It is bound to take a long time and much effort. Really not the job for one man at the expense of his personal Health, life and family. Fr Goodchild though advanced in years is a tower of strength for the Headmaster. They duo one might say strongly resemble Dr Hayman and Fr Foster despite the vast difference in ages. In this scenario it could be too much to seek a revival of the Hayman era.
9. The river has flown down for almost 45 years. The trend is irreversible. We need to accept that. Our understanding is required by the Headmaster who deserves it. Material help wherever and whenever possible should be made available to the Administration by all those in a position to assist.
10. In answer to your question I think more than 3,000 Students would have passed out of Guru since 1942. The OBA has around 750 Members. About 75-100 participate in the Annual Pilgrimage to Guru for the AGM each February. Less than 10 participate in Prize Givings, Special Assembly, Sports Meets, Swimming Meets or similar activity. It has become most difficult to find Office Bearers and fill up the positions on the Ex-Co. You can draw your own conclusions from this picture.
11. The above is a very brief resume. I would not have referred to many other areas worth mentioning, most of which have been dealt with in detail in our News Letters and Reports which have been placed on our Web Site.

Thanks very much once again for taking the trouble to express your views on a subject which is very dear to us all.
Warm Regards
Lakshman

Hi Laksman,

We missed you at our get together .
Here is a pic of those who attended .
We had lots of discussions about Guru and also appreciated the good work that you are doing.
Perhaps It should adopt "INTERNATIONAL" as part of its name and look for some well known teachers (perhaps who have retired) Raise the fees to match the fees charged by International schools and have a smaller number of students whose fees will pay for a school which will supply a 4* education in a boarding school atmosphere that wont or cannot be rivalled by any "International" school.

The problem is to fund the cost of the interim period during all the preperation publicity, and the initial period of low numbers.

Having read Larry SChockmans mail and your mail ( each showing the pros and cons of Guru in yester-year and today) I am convinced that there will be parents of 250 children now attending the "International schools" who will gladly support a school which will produce young men similar to all of us who were so fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend a school such as Guru.

Perhaps this sort of Idea will be supported by a lot of Old boys (financially) rather than the contributions that are now being made towards repairs and maintenence and to cover deficits arising from charging fees of Rs 7500 a month .

I will be very interested to see if this sort of idea will get some positive support and if there is some indication of finacial comitment .
I will be very happy to get involved but this has to be an effort supported by the college governors and also by hundreds if not thousands of old boys.

I am going back to the UK this week but please do keep me in the loop .

Thanks and my very best reagrds

Ananda jayasinghe (AG)
PS.. Had lunch with SK wickremasinghe (old boy 1945 - 1950) and he was one of the first batch of boys in Guru as it was started.

Dear Andy,
Thanks for your mail. Last Saturday my daughter had been invited to spend the day at the home of one of her school friends (who was celebrating her birthday) residing down Templers Place. By the time I dropped her off it was almost half past noon. As I had planned to do some shooting at Mount of the Cricket Carnival which was scheduled to start off at half past eight, there was no way I could drop in at your place. I am sorry I was unable to make it for the chat and lunch. I am sure your discussions were interesting and fruitful. I have involved myself with Guru only very recently and I can contribute only from my personal experiences during that short period.
I shall upload the images you sent on to the Site at the next upload. The guy who helps me being a Muslim, this is not the best time to get work out of him. He was here today to upload some material which I am sure you will find useful and interesting.
As regards your suggestion re- “International” I can tell you this. It is good and perhaps one way out for Guru. We did discuss this option with guys of our vintage as well as others from time to time since 2002.The school being a part of the Anglican Church establishment and the attendant limitations perhaps imposed on them voluntarily or otherwise is the first hurdle. I do not go so far as to question that justification or statutory legality or reasonableness. Nor would most Old Boys. Nobody who has been in close touch with their thinking would have ever imagined that their hierarchy would even consider this proposal. But to our great surprise this idea was explored in some way towards the latter part of 2006. Lyceum was one organisation that showed interest and Gateway. Even Lalith Kotalawala sent a team to Guru to check it out. I understand that within the framework permitted they found it not viable. The amount of capital required to be pumped in is so stunning to bring the place up to acceptable standards of an International School in order to lend their name to the Association. Yet the return from their point of view would be far below expected. We must remember this is a Church School and in Sri Lanka the Anglican Church seems to take a narrow view. I have discussed this with my friends in Perth, Sydney and Brisbane. All of them who are familiar with the Aussie set up pooh poohed this Sri Lankan view and said their Church Schools are doing good business. But then that is their privilege. It is not for us to question them or tell them how to run their establishment.
It might interest you to know that an Old Boy who was at College when Mr. Duleepkumar was teaching introduced to me a Sinhala Lady who is running five International Schools in Tokyo and preparing students for Universities in UK. She was interested in starting an International School in Bandarawela. The situation at Guru having been brought to her notice she realised that it was a ready-made situation. I arranged for her to visit Guru. She did so, took photos and communicated with those funding her from Japan. She informed me that the first thing she would do was to compensate and get rid of the entire Staff and Workforce!!! She had seen and heard enough about them. She was also keen to start off afresh with new students from abroad and any from Sri Lanka who were willing and able to afford. She was prepared to retain the Students until they were found places elsewhere. A huge amount of money was to be pumped in. The name of the College was to be retained, by and large. But the Flag, the Song etc would prevail. It would have been a Joint Venture. I had several discussions with her but found that a proper Project Report or Proposal could not be prepared to be submitted to the Bishop for his study as the required data was not forthcoming. When a Board Meeting approached I was contacted and it was indicated that the Bishop was anxious to learn more. I had met him previously and discussed this matter with him. But I did not want to personally get involved unless a proper proposal could be submitted. The day before the Meeting, the Bishop was so anxious that he wanted the Lady to meet him even without the Proposal. I dropped out of the scene because I was not satisfied about the credentials of the Lady. Probably the Bishop too having discussed matters with her may have thought likewise. So ended that episode. I am mentioning this to show you how frantic the Administration had become. I understand that similar conditions had been suggested to Mr. Lalith Kotalawela too. Yet, he did not find it sufficiently attractive financially.
The lesson to be learnt is that given the current conditions and situation in Sri Lanka one has to choose between running a Private Fee Levying School and running a Charitable Institution for the destitute and needy or refugees from war torn areas or unwanted children or children from broken homes or children whose parents are employed in West Asia and who need to secure accommodation for their kids in Sri Lanka. Unfortunately this is the stark truth. Today there is no Educational Institution running at a loss. Some say Education is the best business. Almost every Sunday papers carry huge supplements on Education that is on offer. Other organisations have opened dozens of International Schools all over the country. But we have found it difficult to make this choice. Neither can we run the School on the present lines in a viable manner. The conditions in Sri Lanka when Dr. Hayman ran the school were totally different. There were 300 odd Students, all Boarders. who were charged about Rs.100/- per month for Boarding and Tuition Fees. A Staff of around 20. Dr. Hayman was not interested in increasing the number of Students. Staff salaries would have averaged a few hundreds. There were only 05 Classes. Every possible Sports facility was available. In certain areas Guru did better than Colombo Schools. An O/Level Cricket Team was able to beat the A/Level Cricket Team of Mt. Under Michel Tissera. All were happy, contented and satisfied. Today things are much different. We need to accept this fact.
If Guru is perhaps the only school in Sri Lanka that keeps its doors open on every single day of the year and is prepared to admit Students to any Class from Kindergarten to O/Level and even without an Admission Fee, and for a monthly Fee of Rs.7,500/- for Boarding and Tuition when its Branch at Bandarawela charges over Rs.60,000/- as Admission Fee and thousands vie to gain Admission, the picture is crystal clear but we are refusing to see the stark truth.
To get back to your idea. The slight change of name suggested by you, etc may not pose major problems. In order to recoup the initial capital expenditure the administration will think of a fee far in excess of what the Bishop could approve having regard to what I have stated earlier. Next, in order to start the type of school you refer to the stumbling block would be the capital outlay for Infrastructure, Facilities, Equipment and Services etc. If you visit Guru you will realise the enormous sum required. Otherwise, the type of student you are thinking of attracting, will not be satisfied with what Guru has to offer.
Then to consider, will there be parents of 250 students willing to send their kids to Guru. Even if the facilities on offer are similar to what the International Schools provide I have my doubts whether you can get the numbers you refer to. Why would parents of today want to board their kids in far off Guru when Colombo offers the same at the same price. Although I am aware of the positive aspects of a Boarding School away from Colombo, I will not board my son or daughter at Guru. I take the view that Parents would not want to deprive their kids what they enjoy now, eg: Satellite TV; PC with email and Internet facilities; ,Mobile Phone; Mc Donalds; Pizza Hut; KFC; DVD Rentals; Birth Day Parties, Pool Parties and Spend- the-Days with school friends, Shopping Malls, Entertainment Parks, Food Courts etc Additional classes in Ballet; Elocution; Art; Singing; Swimming; All other Sports like Tennis etc etc which are available in Colombo to kids Schooling here.
A few months ago when there was so much of uncertainty in Colombo on the security aspect of travel to and from school as well as to and from these classes I thought to myself what a blessing a school like Guru would be for harassed and anxious parents who would have no reason to fret. Yet the overall scene may be that parents prefer to keep their kids at home and send them to school, traffic jams and Security Alerts notwithstanding.
As regards Old Boys in their hundreds and thousands who would rise to the occasion and seriously make donations or funding as referred to by you, instead of the hitherto saga of doing minor repairs and maintenance work at Guru, Andy, I sincerely do not subscribe to your optimism. You are way off course. My experience since 2000 to date gives me a totally different and sad picture. The Bishop too had an idea of collecting Scholarship money for the under privileged at Guru. He would have been disappointed with the reception he got which I will for cosmetic reasons say was less than lukewarm. The OBA too has sent SOS’s from time to time. Sometimes even the postage expended cannot be recovered. The few guys who may be interested in spending have indicated they are interested in the return and wish to run Guru on the lines of a Company naturally managed by them. I have advised them not to waste their time because the Bishop will not and perhaps cannot have any of it.
I want to point out one thing. In 2001 we referred to the situations which prevailed at Guru. We cautioned that we could see the end of the road. Old boys in their numbers rallied round and remitted funds from far and near. It was spontaneous. One Old Boy by himself spent millions refurbishing the entire Senior Dormitory Complex of four Dorms. All I did was to invite him to attend the AGM of March 2002 and have a look at his Old School, having previously kept him informed of the deepening crisis. He visited College after over 40 Years. What he saw moved him. He immediately made his offer. This happened with so many other Old Boys. But we did not cringe and beg for funds. Nor did we ridicule those who did not give or scornfully refer to the meagre amounts they remitted and suggest they could give more. Sadly a lesson has not been learnt from that experience. Lists keep going around and hat collections take place at gatherings and functions leaving a dirty taste. And embarrassing the not so fortunate. And retired Old Boys.
I do hope I have not succeeded in dampening your enthusiasm. What I say is from the little I have gathered from the very short time I have involved myself with Guru perhaps from the fringe. If you peruse the Newsletter and Reports that we have placed on our Website you will see the picture differently.
I trust I have touched on all the matters you made reference to.
To stimulate further discussion on all of these matters I will pass on these mails to all those on my mailing list in the fervent hope that the collective strength of our discussions may bring out some support and perhaps new and fresh thinking.
Warm Regards,
Lucky

Hi Lukshman,

What a sad story , but I suppose your analysis is very realistic. All I can say is that parents of youngsters in western Europe (those who care about their children!) would give an arm and a leg to find a school modled around an English Public school (Eton.. perhaps or even Harrow) where junk food and working class type entertainment will be in short supply .. with loads of sports and a wholesome education which only the elite middleclass can have by sending their kids to boarding schools.
I am afraid, and so sorry that affluent parents in Colombo are hell bent on giving their children a taste of western working class entertainment but yet spend so much in fees at so called International Schools which perhaps do not provide that wholesome education.
Perhaps it is a message that needs to be promulgated ... a message similar to the little Childs cry "The King is naked" !!!!
There is of course an emerging middle class and intelligentia amongst the Masses who I don't think will ever take on the habits and a western way of life for a long time
But Alas the affluent parents of that class will never consider sending their children to a boarding school when the local maha vidyalaya has the best facilities and all for FREE !!.

Yes I do Hope that there will be some comments on this subject from other old boys and well wishers.
How about sending this correspondence to the Bishop.

Thanks and warm regards

Andy (AG) Jayasinghe

CIRUCLAR OF 26TH NOVEMBER 2001

A Note of Appreciation to 62' Group Members for attending Fellowship Dinner
"November 26,2001

Dear Member,
I am sending you this Note of Appreciation for having participated in the Fellowship Dinner last Saturday. Thank you. Whilst we endeavoured to make it a pleasant evening, there may have been shortcomings. Please forgive us for the latter. Your suggestions to make this event (which by popular demand is to be made an annual one) better, are welcome.

Your presence, the wise words of our Senior Old Boys and the discussions had were a source of encouragement to go ahead with our mission to try put things right at Guru, while building up our own relationships with our school chums. The expansion and improvement of our Members Directory will be a useful tool for the latter purpose.

Whilst we will be having similar gatherings now and then, we also hope to arrange serious discussions with senior Old Boys of the calibre of Mr.Duleep Kumar and Mr.Bradman Weerakoon participating fully to discuss strategies to develop College. In fact they both have been pressing us to arrange such discussions early. We have delayed it as we felt giving the Dinner precedence might generate more interest. We feel our decision was justified. Now more old Boys are showing a greater interest in our activities, and the situation at Guru.
We will keep you informed of these events. Please try to make it a point to attend them whenever possible, as the benefit of your contribution to such discussions will be greatly appreciated and valued.

In the meantime, we wish to inform you that the aggregate of the contributions i.e Rs.30,500/- is being utilized.

(a) to enlist some important Members of the Guru Staff for our OBA which we were trying to revitalize and strengthen so that it would be a vital instrument to re-shape the destinies of the College and it's students. You will no doubt recall (that when we were in College in 1959 and thereafter) the extent to which the then staff participated in OBA activities. However at present and in the recent past, the Staff are non-members and silent, helpless onlookers and by-standers. How has this come about? Our OBA has sadly alienated the entire staff from it's activities. Communication difficulties due to language problems should not be a bar. At the past few AGM's Members raised questions relating to examination results, the standard of sports and also achievements in both spheres. The Head Master has been involved only in administration work. Thus, without the most important element involved in these matters participating in the OBA deliberations, the purpose of discussion is counterproductive. We feel this situation must be rectified. The OBA does not pay heed to suggestions and proposals made by the '62 Group. We have therefore established a good rapport direct with the Staff and intend doing something about it right now.
(b) To purchase a Fax Machine for the use of the Head Master at Guru. There is hardly any small business establishment that does not have this useful electronic equipment. College does not have a Telephone System, a Photocopying Machine or a Fax Machine. We hope in time to come to purchase other equipment.

A stamped receipt for your contribution of Rs.2,000/- is enclosed.

Once again a Big Thank you for your support. Please keep in touch.
With kind regards,"

An Invitation to 62' Group Members to attend AGM on March 02,2002
February 08,2002

" Dear
STCG-OBA
AGM AND RE-UNION
I AM WRITING TO INFORM YOU THAT THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF OUR OBA IS NOW FIXED FOR THE EVENING OF SATURDAY MARCH 2,2002.

As you are no doubt fully aware, College is going through a severe crisis financial and otherwise.
Once again about 2 weeks ago, the Head Master was compelled to seek the permission of the Board of Governors to cut and sell about 33 trees on the Campus in order to overcome a huge Bank Overdraft facility and the recurring monthly interest.

Just consider the following facts;
There are about 299 Boarders and 154 Day Boys in College. The School fees is approximately Rs.1,500/- and Boarding Fees is approximately Rs.2,000/- per month. A large proportion of students do not pay their fees on time. The Salaries of employees come to approximately Rs.875,750/- per month. The food bill of the boarders comes to Rs.325,000/-. The Electricity, gratuity and security services aggregate to Rs.100,000/-. The proportion of students to paid employees is 4:1, (which is very high). Even in 1983 when there were 1,247 students on the Roll, there were only 37 minor employees. Today there are 56 minor employees. The standard of English has hit very low depths. The students come from a completely different social background. There are children of Housemaids, Parking Wardens Peons, Farmers and Small Traders. There are no old boys on the tutorial staff. The quality of the tutorial staff has fallen. Until recently, the minor staff and the administration staff were very indisciplined, took advantage of the weak administration, were virtually running the show, and treating College property as their own.

The new Head Master is making a genuine effort to correct this rot. He has made some progress in that direction. However, it will take a long time to put matters right single handedly. The Board of Governors is not taking an active role in rectifying matters. So the ball is in the Head Master's court, fair and square.

All things considered, he is fighting a losing battle if he has to do it all by himself. Very likely, in a matter of time, Guru will have to fold up as it would have run out of trees to be cut, and sold to find operational costs. A lot of people have lost hope. They should not have. I am personally aware of these sentiments having been openly expressed by those not only in the Ex-Co of our OBA but even the Board of Governors.

SHOULD WE LET THIS COURSE RUN AND STAND BY AND WATCH?
OR SHOULD WE TAKE AN ACTIVE INTEREST, REVIVE THE OBA THROUGH AN ENERGETIC EX-CO WHICH WILL WORK ALONGSIDE THE HEAD MASTER GIVING HIM ALL THE ASSISTANCE AND RICH EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE AMONGST THE OLD BOYS, PARTICULARLY THOSE WHO HAVE HAD VERY CLOSE RELATIONS WITH DR.HAYMAN, THE OBA, AND COLLEGE AND WHO ARE DEEPLY CONCERNED?.

Our group would like to help in this endeavour. College needs a complete overhaul.. This has to be done in stages due to lack of finance. One solution suggested is starting the Reforms with Years 01 and 02. The fees may have to be increased even 300%. The amenities and facilities available to those students including the quality of their teaching staff should be upgraded. Better teachers on higher pay, even foreigners, may have to be recruited. Their accommodation has to be improved. The food provided as well as games, sports facilities and extra curricular activities have to be brought back to levels that prevailed earlier. The infrastructure relating to communications, roads, buildings, electricity, water service, need to be re-done and improved. Redundant members of the staff need to be sent away with acceptable settlements. These changes should be implemented, depending on finances available starting with Years 01 and 02 and thereafter upwards, perhaps on a 5 year plan to cover all students up to O'Level.

IN ORDER THAT THIS SCHEME OF THINGS OR ANY OTHER SCHEMES THAT ARE FOUND TO BE ACCEPTABLE IS PUT IN PLACE, THE EX-CO, APPOINTED SHOULD BE A DYNAMIC ONE, HARNESSING ALL THE EXPERTISE AND TECHNICAL KNOW-HOW AVAILABLE AMONGST THE OLD BOYS IN SRI LANKA AND ABROAD AND FROM OUTSIDE THE OBA. The last few years has seen a lethargic and lackadaisical Ex-Co putting the OBA to sleep, and sending the College to the land of no return.

We have prevailed upon the Tutorial Staff to bear with the situation till conditions improve. They would otherwise have come out in open rebellion. They have been tactfully moved closer to the present Head Master. Earlier they were on a head on collision course with the Ex-Head Master.

We have also been successful in prevailing upon Mr.P S Duleep Kumar to come back to the OBA, from which he had distanced himself over last several years and spearhead the campaign to restore College to its former glory. He has answered our call and is anxiously awaiting to play a significant role in a rejuvenated OBA. A team of top class officials who have the time, willingness and capability of improving things should move in to the Ex-Co in order to undertake this task WITH YOUR SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT.
I THEREFORE REQUEST YOU MOST HUMBLY TO JOIN US IN OUR MISSION TO HAVE APPOINTED AN EX-CO WITH MR.DULEEP KUMAR AT IT'S HEAD TO WORK IN CLOSE CO-OPERATION WITH THE HEAD MASTER AND THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS IN ORDER TO ENRICH THE CONTRIBUTION WE AS OLD BOYS CAN MAKE TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT AND RESUSCITATION OF COLLEGE.

PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO BE PRESENT AT THE AGM ON MARCH 2,2002 AT GURUTALAWA AND BE A PARTICIPANT IN THIS GREAT VENTURE TO RESTORE A NATIONAL ASSET TO WHAT IT OUGHT TO BE.

Your contribution and presence will greatly enhance the chance of putting College on its feet once again for which all Thomians, Young and Old, Near and Far will be ever grateful. I hope you will answer the call of your Alma Mater.

A request to OBA members enrolled by us to attend AGM on March 02,2002
"February 18,2002

Dear Member,
STCG-OBA
AGM AND RE-UNION
I AM WRITING TO INFORM YOU THAT THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF OUR OBA IS NOW FIXED FOR THE EVENING OF SATURDAY MARCH 2,2002.

Your Application to join the OBA together with your subscription fee were transmitted by us to the Secretary of the OBA on under advice to you. We have not received any acknowledgement. We do not think you have either. Unfortunately, the practice has been not to do so. Therefore the first intimation a person like you would normally receive of being admitted will be only on receipt of any Notice from him or if your name is announced at the next AGM as one who became a member during the year. This is a very unsatisfactory system and procedure. All our requests for a change have unfortunately fallen on deaf ears. We intend to address this issue in due course and introduce better systems and streamline the procedure if our friends are elected to office in the Ex-Co at the next AGM. ONE THEREFORE HAS TO ASSUME YOU ARE A MEMBER, NOT HAVING HAD ANY NEGATIVE RESPONSE FROM THE SECRETARY THUS FAR.

According to the Rules one item on the Agenda of the AGM is the election of an Executive Committee. Apart from a vague and bare paper notice (minus an Agenda) which had appeared on February 08,2002 we have to date not received individual notices or an Agenda as required by the Rules. Even if we do receive it now it will not be sufficient compliance with the statutory requirement of 21 days notice envisaged in the Rules. WE THEREFORE HAVE TO ASSUME ONCE MORE THAT THE ELECTION OF OFFICE BEARERS IS AN ITEM ON THE AGENDA OF THE ABOVE AGM.

As you are no doubt fully aware, College is going through a severe crisis financial and otherwise. Once again about 3 weeks ago, the Head Master was compelled to seek the permission of the Board of Governors to cut and sell about 33 trees on the Campus in order to overcome a huge Bank Overdraft facility and the recurring monthly interest.

Dear Mr.
Mr.Ananda Jayasinghe who was at Gurutalawa in or around 1958-1960 and who passed out as a Attorney-at-Law in Sri Lanka and is presently practicing as a Solicitor in Melbourne, was kind enough to make available your contact details to me.
According to the available records you are not a member of the OBA. We are sending you herewith an Application Form to enable you to join if you so desire.

Our Web Site ie:stcg62group.com will give you fairly updated news of the College, the OBA and our Group.
Our Group consisting mainly of those who entered College in or around 1958 and left College in or around 1962 has been actively monitoring the affairs of the OBA and College since February 2001 and having generated sufficient concern and interest amongst Old Boys, we have been successful in placing in office a fairly responsible and respected set of Old Boys with a view to re-organise the OBA and resuscitate College which in everybody's view has deteriorated.

We seek the active participation of all Old Boys of all ages in our endeavours. Please ask all your friends in College to join the OBA and help in the noble task of reviving College.

We will send you our Newsletters as well as keep you informed of OBA activities and College activities. We look forward to your support and continued interest in these activities.

(Addresses given by Mr.Ananda Jayasinghe of Melbourne)
"May 16,2002

Dear Mr.

Mr.Ananda Jayasinghe who was at Gurutalawa in or around 1958-1960 and who passed out as a Attorney-at-Law in Sri Lanka in the 1970's and is presently practicing as a Solicitor in Melbourne, was kind enough to make available your contact details to me.
More than 250 Members of the OBA could not be contacted due to non availability of addresses. You were one of them. We have now entered your contact details in the Registers.

Our Web Site ie:stcg62group.com will give you fairly updated news of the OBA and College.

Our Group consisting mainly of those who entered College in or around 1958 and left College in or around 1962 had been monitoring the affairs of the OBA and College since February 2001 and having generated sufficient concern and interest amongst Old Boys, we were successful in placing in office a fairly responsible and respected set of Old Boys with a view to re-organise the OBA and resuscitate College both of which in everybody's view needed urgent re-organising.

We seek the active participation of all Old Boys of all ages in our endeavours. Please ask all your friends in College to join the OBA and help in the noble task of reviving College. A copy of the Application Form is enclosed.

We will send you our Newsletters as well as keep you informed of OBA activities and College activities. We look forward to your support and continued interest in these activities.

Please write to us if you require any information or clarification.

With kind regards,"

CIRUCLAR OF 07TH JUNE 2002

A letter re Progress of Activities of Ex-Co

"June 07,2002
Dear Member/Fellow Thomian

1. The new Ex-Co which was elected on March, 02, 2002 comprising mainly of those proposed by our Group has as you would have seen from our recent Newsletters, got into top gear without delay. Although there were a few hiccups due to some delay on the part of the previous Office Bearers to hand over Registers, Books, Files etc., they were adroitly overcome without causing ill-will.

2. We will refer in our next Newsletter to the manner in which various matters which required attention had got side-tracked and / or put aside into the limbo of forgotten things over the last few years. This will only be to make the current Torch Bearers " turn the search-light inwards" and be cautioned that so many are watching how they perform. We want to ensure that the current Ex-Co will not be guilty of similar lapses. Hence, we shall continue to monitor their activities and progress of work and endeavour to keep the Ex-Co on their toes.

3. In this effort, the constructive criticism, assistance, guidance, expertise of all our members is solicited and most welcome. In fact, several Old Boys belonging to much earlier eras than ours, are in constant touch with us, guiding us and offering constructive criticism and their support towards all activities connected with the rejuvenating the OBA as well as resuscitating College. WE VALUE SUCH ADVISE AND ARE DEEPLY APPRECIATIVE OF SAME. The final objective is the betterment of College. We are all motivated by the love we have for that institution and the debt we feel we owe the founding fathers for all they have inculcated in us.

4. As far as the OBA is concerned, most of the secretarial work is already streamlined within the time frame we set for ourselves as planned. An updated New Register of Members is now available. Lists of Members whose current addresses are not known have been circulated with our Newsletters. These lists have also been handed over to the Members of the Ex-Co. Already Data relating to 20 of such Members has been received. The Register of Members has been updated accordingly. The Membership Cards of all 581 Members who addresses are available were prepared, and laminated. The first Newsletter of the OBA was issued at the end of May 2002 as planned. Our Mailing list extends to only 200 or so. These lists will also go out with the first issue of the OBA Newsletter, which has a reach of almost 600 members. The Membership cards of the Members too were dispatched with the said Newsletter. The Directory of Members has been printed and is available for sale at the nominal price of Rs. 150/- within the time frame planned. A New Application Form for Membership consolidating the previous one with the Data Sheet for Directory has been approved and circulated. Applications submitted on the old format will not be rejected.

5. As regards the updating of the Rules of the Association, the Sub-committee dealing with the subject has finalized its own draft after several sittings and will submit same for discussion before the Ex-Co at its next meeting. It is expected to be circulated among the Membership for discussion and subsequently placed before a Special General Meeting for discussion prior to being placed before the AGM for adoption.

6.a). The next Meeting of the Ex-Co will be at Guru on June, 15,2002. It is hoped to have every 3rd meeting at Guru. In furtherance of the avowed belief of the current Ex-Co, every effort is being made to have better inter-action between the OBA on the one hand and College, it's Tutorial Staff, and students on the other. With this idea in mind, certain activities are planned to coincide with the said first Meeting of the Ex-Co at Guru.

b). a Health Camp involving 5 -6 Medical Practitioners including Dental, E.N.T. and Eye Specialists to examine all students (and time permitting, the Minor Staff) and Tutorial Staff resident at the campus is tentatively fixed for the morning of June 15. A Medical Report /Record will be handed over to each student examined.
c). The Donation to the College Library of Books procured by Mr. Don Gazara ( D.C. Kannangara) from U.K. together with the first consignment of Books Brig. Bandula Munasinghe obtained from Asia Foundation will also take place at Guru that morning. We are requesting the Head Master to oblige us by making the recipients, students from the respective levels. Mr. Don Gazara has arranged to obtain more books which will be shipped shortly. Brig. B. Munasinghe has also arranged to obtain monthly consignments from Asia Foundation. These thoughtful donations, it is hoped, will go a long way to enhance the value of the Library and inculcate and re-introduce the reading habit amongst the present day students.
d). The rehabilitation of the senior dormitories which is a massive project was undertaken by Mr. B.A. Mahipala single-handed, after he saw the pathetic conditions under which the students were given accommodation. Millions of Rupees are being channeled to this laudable project without in anyway creating financial difficulties and embarrassment to College. The Hayman dormitory has been completed. Work is in progress on Reid, Garnier and De Saram together with their toilets. Also in the same project will be covered the several quarters of the staff members attached to these dorms.
e). Mr. P.J. Fernando has obtained quotations for the rehabilitation of the Badminton and Basketball Courts. This work is to commence shortly. The Squash Court is to get a completely new face-lift during the August holidays under the supervision of Mr. Prabath Jayasundera. In the meantime, sports equipment, ( mostly in connection with these sports activities) is also envisaged to be gifted on June 15 to the students participating in these activities.
f). We are obtaining profiles relating to all students and employees ( i.e. Tutorial, Administrations and Minor Staff) with a view to undertake a complete Study of the school as it stands today and to determine how it should progress from now on. In this connection, the subjects taught, the sports and other activities available, the location of class rooms, number and identity of students in each class, medium of instruction, the manner in which students are accommodated in different dormitories, the number and age groups, the weekly food menu on which the students and others resident survive etc. etc. are being collected. We also hope to interview as many members of the staff and others who are prepared to come forward and help us in our search for improving inter alia Management and Administration to work out or chart the course ahead for Guru, PARTICULARLY THE OPTIMUM NUMBER OF STUDENTS TO BE HAD ON THE ROLL BOTH BOARDERS AND DAY BOYS AS WELL AS TUTORIAL, ADMINISTRATION AND MINOR STAFF, THE LEVEL OF COMPETENCY ETC. OF TUTORIAL AND ADMINSITRATION STAFF TO BE RECRUITED AND / OR RETAINED AND WHETHER ADMISSION OF STUDENTS SHOULD BE SELECTIVE. These are all matters that require urgent attention if Guru is to get back on track rather than slide down.
coaching camps and clinics for some sports activities was planned. Arrangements are being finalized.
g). The year 2002 marks the Diamond Jubilee of the College. To celebrate it in an appropriate manner a Gala Dinner Dance is being organized. Although the Hilton was booked for November 01, the venue and date had to be changed as it happened to be All Saints Day. THE EVENT IS NOW DUE TO TAKE PLACE ON NOVEMBER 16TH AT THE SAPPHIRE BALL ROOM OF THE CEYLON CONTINENTAL HOTEL. An Organizing committee chaired by Mr. Sunil Watawala is sparing no pains to make the event a success. All are confident that the target of Rs. 1,000,000/- from the advertisements in the Dance Souvenir, can be achieved without much difficulty. Banners, and outright donations are also projected to bring in the much required additional funds. The funds thus collected will be generally for Development work at Guru. One area that had been identified as requiring urgent attention is the provision of staff quarters of acceptable standards. Sohan and the X'periments together with Zodiac are engaged as the bands in attendance. Attractive prizes and several surprises are on the cards. Mr. Faizal Bongso will be the Compere and Master of Ceremonies. Important speeches will be made by a few prominent Old Boys. Requests for Table reservations have already come in. All Old Boys are invited to join in and make the event the grand success it deserves to be.
h). We hope to engage the services of a Surveyor to carry out an extensive survey of college property so that an updated plan is available in College. This has become necessary as it is generally believed that villagers have encroached on College property and also became the fence that existed around the property no longer exists and the Head Master is anxious to have the fence back in place.
i). A complete rehabilitation of the water supply system including cleaning of wells water tanks and pipes is to be carried out during the August vacation.
j). the roof of the old class room block is in need of repairs, i.e. replacement of some asbestos sheets. This will include relevant electrical work and painting too. An estimate is awaited for cost of materials and labour.

k.Work on the bio-gas project using the facilities available on the farm to enable the kitchen in the new dining hall building to function has commenced and should be commissioned shortly.
l. New beds and lockers of uniform pattern for all the dormitories is also planned to be installed. This will definitely bring a vast change to the present eye sore. We are tying to get the required data from College before determining the cost.
m. We have also discussed matters with the British High commissioner and those at the British Council in order to engage competent masters for important subjects like English, Maths, Science and I.T. A very serious draw -back at Guru is the non availability of adequate number of qualified competent teachers for those subjects. It was also found that most of the tutorial staff are available on the campus during school hours at the end of which their interest in College and students cease for the day. This is a serious draw-back and one reason for the deterioration of all standards at Guru including discipline. Guru was and is meant to be a Boarding School. There can be no Boarding School if the tutorial Staff disappear from the premises at 1.30 p.m. It has also been observed that many sports activities have been abandoned and that the few that are available are performed more or less in a lackadaisical manner without any real interest. Everybody knows that games were compulsory at Guru and the education imparted included this aspect of physical and character building and development. This necessarily means that in recruiting new members to the staff, they should be as far as possible competent in English, preferably with I.T. skills, able to coach or take charge of as many sports and extra curricular activities as possible, willing to reside on the campus, (in quarters that should be rehabilitated to come up to acceptable standards), get completely involved in the class room and the playing field and in all student activities.
n. the non-availability of a responsible person during school holidays has also been brought to our notice. It is observed that during traditional and customary holiday periods, such as Sinhala and Tamil New Year and the Christmas vacations a fairly responsible person must be available on the Campus, if the Head Master is on leave.

7. WE ARE NOW APPEALING TO ALL OUR FRIENDS AS WELL AS ALL OLD BOYS, YOUNG AND OLD, TO RALLY ROUND THE COLLEGE AND CONTRIBUTE IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE TO HALT THE DETERIORATION AND MAKE COLLEGE TURN AROUND. IT IS NOT EASY FOR A HANDFUL OF US OR THOSE ON THE EX-CO ALONE TO TAKE ON THIS MIGHTY TASK. THEREFORE, THIS APPEAL GOES OUT TO ONE AND ALL TO SEND YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS WHETHER FINANCIAL OR MATERIAL. ( BOOKS FOR THE LIBRARY; LAB EQUIPMENT; FURNITURE FOR THE DORMITORIES, CLASS ROOMS, DINING HALL, SCHOOL HALL; SPORTS EQUIPMENT ETC. ETC. ARE ALL WELCOME) THOSE WHO WISH TO MAKE FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TOWARDS ANY ONE OF THESE CAUSES MAY DO SO. APART FROM THAT, THE REHABILITATION OF STAFF QUARTERS, THE OLD CLASS ROOM BLOCK, THE WINCHESTER DORMITORY AND THE KEBLE COMPLEX INCLUDING ITS PLAY GROUND, AND ACTIVITY AREA, ARE OTHER PROJECTS WHICH NEED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. FUNDS REMITTED TOWARDS ANY OF THESE CAUSES OR PROJECTS WILL BE CREDITED TO A SEPARATE ACCOUNT AND UTILIZED TOWARDS THAT UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE EX-CO. CHEQUES SHOULD BE DRAWN IN FAVOUR OF S.T.C.G - O.B.A. AND CROSSED " A/C PAYEE ONLY" . AN OFFICIAL RECEIPT IS NOW REQUIRED TO BE DISPATCHED WITHIN 3 WORKING DAYS OF THE DATE OF RECEIPT OF ANY REMITTANCE IN ACCORDANCE WITH A CODE OF CONDUCT , PROCEDURE AND PRACTICE WE HAVE INITIATED FOR OURSELVES. WE THEREFORE EARNESTLY REQUEST YOU ( WHO HAVE FROM TIME TO TIME INQUIRED ABOUT MAKING REMITTANCES) TO DO SO NOW. THE REGISTERED OFFICE OF THE OBA IS C/O. THE HEAD MASTER AT S.T.C.G. BUT CORRESPONDENCE IN THIS CONNECTION COULD ALSO BE ADDRESSED TO MR. SHERVON FERNANDO, HONY. SECRETARY OF S.T.C.G - O.B.A. OF NO. 386/2, ARALIYA GARDENS, NAWALA, KOSWATTE OR MR. GAMINI FERNANDO, HONY TREASURERS AT NO. 01 GAMINI PLACE, DEHIWALA. MEMBERS OF OUR GROUP ARE ALSO WELCOME TO REMIT IT DIRECT TO OUR SECRETARIAT FOR ONWARD TRANSMISSION TO THE RESPECTIVE OFFICE BEARERS OF THE O.B.A. WHO WILL ISSUE THE OFFICIAL RECEIPT."

With Kind regards,"

CIRUCLAR OF 25TH JUNE 2002

A letter re- Ex-Co Meeting at Guru in June 2002
"June 25,2002}

Dear Member,
1. Enclosed is a note, which formed the basis of requesting our Members to join us for a discussion on June 11,2002 at the office of the Senior Vice President, Mr.P S Duleep Kumar, which was attended by Mr.Bandula Wanigasekera and Mr.Shervon Fernando, Hony. Treasurer and also the following members of our Group namely, Mr.Sarath Suraweera, Mr.Jabir Junaid, Mr.Gamini Fernando, Mr.Nihal Wanniarachchi, Mr.Rizvi Jalill and the under-signed.

2. The Senior Vice President was of the view that almost all problems encountered by the Head Master have been inherited by him, that he is generally a mild natured person, that it is difficult to find a Head Master for Gurutalawa and so we should do nothing to cause the Head Master unnecessary anxiety about interference from the OBA in his affairs; that he has made a good start; that we should give him time to settle down and correct the situation at Gurutalawa in his own way. Our Group agreed with most of these points of view, concerning which care had been taken since his installation in September 2001. However, as regards the implementation of corrective measures in certain areas referred to by us, with great respect we differ because we feel time may run out especially for those who work on almost a full time basis (and also for Guru).

3. Our Group was anxious that the Senior Vice President as the ideal person should speak to the Head Master in an informal manner, advise him and also apprise him of various matters that the Head Master may not be privy to, and that the week end during which the Ex-Co was to have its next meeting at Gurutalawa was perhaps an ideal situation to do so.

4. The Ex-Co Meeting was held on June 15,2002 at Gurutalawa. Our Group organised various other activities to coincide with the meeting. Better interation between the OBA on one had and the Head Master, the Staff and most important the students on the other hand were the ultimate aim.

5. Among the activities organised were a Musical Extravaganza meant exclusively for the students, on the evening of June 14,2002 by having a D J provide music for dancing in which almost the entire student population of 300 thoroughly enjoyed themselves until 11.00 p.m. when the Head Master called a halt. At the request of the students four competitions were held and Awards made to selected winners. The effect this had on the young student population aged 5-17 years will be etched in the memory of all who witnessed it as long as they live. To have seen 300 plus students who were supposed to be from very backward backgrounds socially, surging on to the dance floor of the Foster Hall the moment the music started, had to be seen to be believed. In fact the head Master and his Staff were spellbound, and speechless. It was so moving to see these young boys who miss so much of the basic comforts, food, accommodation, sports etc etc., let themselves go. The event was a huge success and won the hearts of the entire student population. Everyone knows that the food provided for the students at College is putrid. The diet is changed when Old Boys attend the AGM or the Ex-Co or the Board of Governors is at hand. We had arranged to provide a sumptuous dinner through a caterer in Bandarawela organised by a former Head Prefect and All Round Scholar of our Group, immediately before the Musical show. Unfortunately the Dinner had tobe called off because of certain unforeseen personal problem encountered by the Caterer.

6. Life Saving has been revived and an effort is being made to put Swimming back on the scale it was. This would mark a special tribute to Dr.Hayman. You are no doubt aware that his heart was in Life Saving and Swimming. We donated Life Saving and Swimming equipment consisting of Life Saving Buoys, Torpedoes, Life Jackets and various other paraphernalia to be used in the pool, after a special display of life saving by some Junior Students. Sports Equipment for Hockey, Basketball, Rugger etc etc and a large volume of books for the library was also donated. Individual desks and chairs for 02 class rooms were donated and delivered in replacement of tables and benches without back support, which had existed from our time i.e the 1950's. These gestures were appreciated sincerely by the Masters in Charge and Student participants alike.

7. A Health Camp in which over 6 Medical Personnel, mostly Old Boys participated, was also held on June15th. The entire student population together with staff, minor staff, and their families who were available on the Campus were examined by the Medical Team. All of them were given Medical Records to retain with them. Specialized Eye and Dental Care were also provided. This sincere effort was also appreciated by all who were provided with medical attention.

8. A member of our group Mr.BA Mahipala single handedly spent well over a Million Rupees in order to replace the roof of the senior dormitories, which were given a complete refurbishment and rehabilitation. Senior students had moved into residence in better surroundings. This monumental work had been completed in less than 02 months without any fuss or noise.

9. Landscaping of the Campus beginning with the garden in front of the Senior Dormitories had commenced. This work will move on to the environs of the Swimming Pool and the Chapel and thereafter to other areas of the Campus to restore the gardens to what it used to be in the old days. All this work was done without the hassle of involving or worrying the OBA itself or even the College and the Head Master.
10. All in all the ultimate objective of bringing the Head Master, his staff, the minor staff and mostly the students closer to the OBA was achieved beyond expected levels.

11. Our thanks go out to Mr.B A Mahipala, Mr.Don Gazara, Mr.Anilal Algama, Mr.Rizvi Jalill, Brigadier Bandula Munasinghe, Mr.Prabath Jayasundera, Mr.Sujeewa Godage, and Mr.Ruwan Munasinghe all of whom contributed in different ways to create this great mood of goodwill so that we can continue to work closely with the Head Master without feelings of mistrust or suspicion. We are also greatly indebted to Mr.Bandula Wanigasekera for the guidance, advise and assistance given without any hesitation at all times in all our activities. A word of appreciation is also due to Mr.Sunil Watawala, Mr.Sarath Suraweera, Mr.Gamini Fernando and Mr.Suresh Thiyagarajah, who together with the others mentioned above indicated that this Ex-Co was very much concerned with all aspects of life at Gurutalawa, touching on student activities be it academic, sports accommodation, discipline, food, recreation etc etc and the Ex-Co was not a one man show or rubber stamp.

12. A word of appreciation is also due to so many members particularly Mr.Jabir Junaid who participated actively in the Ex-Co meeting of June 15th at Gurutalawa for setting the mood and trying to make the Head Master feel at ease, that all of us were his friends anxious to help, not to torment him.

13. Since its inauguration in 1959, for the first time the Membership has witnessed several innovative and effective measures taken within a very short term in office. An up-dated New Register of Members is available and could be inspected by any Member. New Laminated Membership Cards have been sent to all Members whose addresses are known and on the Register. The First Newsletter has been sent out. Further Newsletters will go out at least once in 3 months ( this will be apart from the 62 Group Newsletters), A Directory of Members is available for the first time since 1959 nominally priced at Rs.150/-. It could be purchased from any one of the following persons.

1. Mr.Shervon Fernando
Hony Secretary,
No.38/2,Araliya Gardens,
Nawala, Koswatte.
Telephone: (O) 075-353017, ( R ) 074-405858, (C ) 0777-320676

2. Mr.Gamini Fernando
No.1, Gamini Place,
Kawdana, Dehiwala
Telephone: (O) 715811, ( R) 739896, ( C) 071-2753859

3. Mr.Lakshman Jayatilaka
No.23,1st Lane,
Kirillapone, Colombo 05
Telephone: (O) 854164, ( D) 818989, (C ) 0722-246324, 0722-243569

14. All Members of the Ex-Co have been given Application Forms for enrolment of Members. Application Forms are enclosed with letters going out from the Hony. Secretary and the 62 Group Co-ordinating Secretariat. Application Forms are also available with the Head Master to be given out to school leavers. Bell Simon's son Premadasa who is working in the Head Master's Office has been selected by the Head Master on our suggestion that he appoint a person from his office to co-ordinate OBA activities in College.

15. On receipt of any Application for Membership, the enrolment is now usually effected within 24 hours. An official receipt for subscription fees, the Membership Card with past issues of the Newsletters will be despatched within 03 working days.

16. All contributions towards the College Development fund etc, received by the OBA are acknowledged with an official receipt within 03 working days by the Hony. Treasurer.

17. All letters received by the Hony. Secretary are acknowledged within 03 working days. We have streamlined office procedures so that all letters received or despatched by the Hony. Secretary are entered in Inward and Outward Letter Registers. The letters are date franked and filed in appropriate files. These will all be handed over to the New Office Bearers when the term of the present office Bearers end.

18. One point to be remembered is that in all of the above activities not one cent out of moneys belonging to the OBA has been expended. All the Secretarial work including the printing of the Newsletters and the Members Directory as well as postage, stationary, telephone, both local and foreign, publicity on Web Site as well as all building development, landscaping repairs, rehabilitation work; library, sports and welfare measures at College have been undertaken by Members individually, making great sacrifices, and working behind the scenes.

19. The Ex-Co Meeting itself was very productive and went on till 3.00 p.m, when we broke off for lunch. Almost all members of the Ex-Co raised various issues in an atmosphere of calm and cordiality and the Head Master responded in like manner. Nobody felt the Head Master had been unduly pressurized and now the environment has been created to have a better dialogue with the Head Master. Any member who is interested in participating or contributing is being made welcome at Ex-Co Meetings, which are held in such a manner to show the membership they are open to criticism and that ideas/proposals are welcome. All proposals, suggestions and ideas for improvement of the OBA or revival of College are placed before the OBA for discussion and where necessary the Old Boy concerned is invited to discuss same at the next meeting of the Ex-Co Members who wish to participate at meetings of the Ex-Co are invited to do so when they let their interest be known. The Directory of Members was ready for sale at that Meeting at the nominal price of Rs.150/- and all available copies were snapped up, this being the first time since the inauguration in 1959 that a Directory was put out. It also went on record that the first issue of the OBA Newsletter was received with much appreciation and commendation by the membership, not only in Sri Lanka but also all over the world to whom it was sent. Membership Cards too had been received and the clearing up of past errors and omissions was complete.

20. We had high lighted in our confidential Report of October,2001 which was made available to the Bishop and several others the feeling of frustration and despair prevailing amongst the students, the belief that nobody cared for them; that the boarding had virtually become a convenient place to keep unwanted children from broken homes, rejects from other schools, or parents who were in the Middle East and whose fathers had lost their lives in the North and East; and elsewhere etc etc. Our efforts have paid dividends. We need to keep up the pressure and ensure that the OBA gets closer to the school and all it's activities working alongside with the Head Master and assuring him that the OBA is there to assist him, not to breathe down his neck or dictate to him. THESE SENTIMENTS WERE EXPLAINED TO HIM AT THE EX-CO MEETING SO THAT NOBODY CAN NOW SAY THAT THE OBA IS INTERFERING IN HIS AREAS OF WORK. The sense of urgency, which pervades our activities, is because the sacrifices we are making cannot go on indefinitely. We need to revert to our own families, offices and professional work. A full time commitment entails many problems. Those who do not participate in such activities are insensitive to our problems.

21. Furthermore, members of our Group have no intention of holding on to Office indefinitely. Our mandate ceases in early 2003. We have already almost completed the revival of the OBA, cleaned up all the grey areas and our intention is to hand over the OBA on a clean sheet. No witch hunting was done and will be done.

22. It has been stressed that our activities were not with the intention of going on a witch-hunting in College or in the OBA. Our innovative and thoughtful activities generated much goodwill amongst the resident population of Gurutalawa, even the minor staff. The general belief has been established that the current Ex-Co is sincerely determined not only to revive the OBA but work closely with the Head Master, having the welfare of College, meaning substantially its present and future students, as well as the Tutorial, Academic and Minor staff very much in mind.

23. Our hand of friendship had been extended to all, event to those who were replaced by us. We have not been petty minded. It is left to those who come after us, to carry on the good work. It is not possible to burn fuel at this pace for a couple of years and hence, our sense of urgency which many cannot understand because the established practice is to get elected and warm their seats.

24. Those who are used to that scenario cannot see why we wish to put things right in College and in the OBA fast when it can be done without any difficulty. They believe that what can be done today must be put off for tomorrow.

25. We look forward to the very Special Event in the Calendar of the OBA for this year (which is the Diamond Jubilee Year of the College) namely, the Gala Dinner Dance fixed for November 16th 2002, at the Sapphire Ballroom of the Ceylon Continental Hotel. This event is being organised under the expert Chairmanship of Mr.Sunil Watawala with whom a large number of our members are working closely to make that evening a memorable one. We hope you will join in the fun. All proceeds are being utilized for the "College Development Programme". The target to be achieved is Rs.1,000,000/-. By all reports received so far this will not be difficult.

With kind regards,"

CIRUCLAR 12TH JULY 2002

A letter calling for Development Funds

July 12, 2002

Dear Member,

I hope you received Issue 01 of the OBA Newsletter.

You should receive Issue 02 in the coming week or so.
Please send us News of our Friends in College and other Old Boys which could be included in the future Newsletters.
Also if you have any news or matters of interest that could be included they would be welcome.

I am attaching a list of Members of the OBA whose present whereabouts are not known. Please help to trace them so that they could be kept informed of OBA activities and matters relating to College.

As you are no doubt aware all aspects of life at Guru have deteriorated greatly and the new Ex-Co which has been put in to office by the 62 Group is trying hard to re-develop College. A Gala Dinner Dance is organized on November 16,2002 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of College. If there is any possibility of your coming to Sri Lanka during that time please make it a point to attend.

During the last one year or so several of our friends had been inquiring from me how they could help. If you are in a position to send any donation/contribution, please do so. The cheques should be drawn in favour of "S.Thomas' College, Gurutalawa- OBA" and crossed "A/C Payee only". The Treasurer Mr.Gamini Fernando will issue a Receipt promptly. The Receipt Nos and the Names of the Donors will be carried in all Newsletters (not the amount). We have re organized and streamlined all OBA activities and procedure to ensure there is greater transparency.

With kind regards,

A Letter to Non Member Old Boy to join OBA
(Addresses given by Mr. John Marasinghe)

August 07,2002

Dear Mr.
Mr.John Marasinghe who was on the staff at Gurutalawa from 1948-1990 and who is presently at Douglas & Sons Ltd, No.221, Panchikawatte Road, Colombo 10 was kind enough to make available your contact details to me.

According to the available records you are not a member of the OBA. We are sending you herewith an Application Form to enable you to join, if you so desire.

Since its inauguration in 1959 it has been possible for the first time for the OBA this year to send out 02 Newsletters. Also for the first time a Members Directory has been put out. Every 3rd Meeting of the Ex-Co is held at College coupled with various other activities eg: Donation of Sports Equipments; Books for the Library; Swimming & Life Saving Displays; Musical evenings for the entertainment of students by taking Disc Jockeys from Colombo; Health Camps to provide free Medical attention to all residents on the Campus including the staff, Minor Staff and their families etc, etc

This year is also the Diamond Jubilee Anniversary of the College and a Gala Dinner Dance is organized for November 16,2002 at the Ceylon Continental Hotel. We are hoping all Old Boys will contribute by participating or making a donation etc, etc. All Collections are to be utilized by the OBA towards Development Activities in College. The provision of New Beds & Mattress for the Dorms; Individual Tables & Chairs for the Class Rooms; Sports Equipment and facilities, etc etc, refurbishment/repair of the Staff Quarters and the Roof of the Old Class Room Block etc, etc are some of the projects so far identified.

Please write to us if you require any information or clarification.

A letter re Progress of Ex-Co activities etc

"September 19,2002
Dear Member,

You would have by now received Newsletters Nos.1-10 from this Secretariat as well as the OBA Newsletters Nos One & Two.
Our Secretariat continues to assist the Secretary and the Treasurer of the OBA in their day to day activities and dealings both with the College and the Membership.

It also co-ordinates a fair volume of work undertaken by various Old Boys towards the development of College apart from the re organization of the OBA. As far as the activities of the OBA are concerned, we are proud to state that all procedures have been streamlined and the work of the Secretary and the Treasurer goes on smoothly. Regular Newsletters, the new Members Directory, Membership Cards, enrolment of Members, registering changes of residences of Members etc are all handled with efficiency and without delay. All have accepted that there is a marked improvement.

As regards development work at College, a firm of Chartered Accountants have been engaged to study and report on the accounting system so that once and for all fraud and misappropriation will not be the order of the day. All financial and accounting matters will be regularized to prevent such abuse. The Headmaster has assured his fullest co-operation to achieve these objectives. In a historic and landmark departure from the past the Headmaster has accepted the value and the necessity of the immense contribution the OBA can and should make towards the development of the College which includes his administration. He has agreed to implement in full any recommendations which may be made towards better financial control in the administration. These achievements are a tribute to the wisdom of the Headmaster and also the present Senior and Mature leadership of the OBA who have endervoured to avoid any confrontations and made it possible for the Ex-Co to have a very cordial relationship with the Headmaster for the benefit and advantage of the College.

Following this foundation much development work has already been accomplished. It will not be possible for the College to generate any surplus income which could be channelled towards the projects that need urgent attention. It will be through the efforts of Old Boys and well wishers and their generosity that such development work can take place. We itemize below some of the matters that require urgent attention.
Replacement of old tables and benches in the class rooms with individual desks and chairs; replacement of existing beds, bunk beds, mattresses and providing new study tables and lockers for the dorms; lab equipment; books for the library; equipment and facilities for Sports (cricket, hockey, badminton, basket ball, squash, swimming etc); and rehabilitation of the Diving Boards; revival of Tennis, Gymnastic, Boxing etc, etc the complete overhaul of the water supply system; improvement of all roads within the campus; erecting a fence around the campus; providing equipment etc for the pantry and kitchen; partitioning the Administration Block in to room; as the completed building has since February 2001 not been put to use; repair of the roof of the old Class Room Block; purchase of a large van for College for movement of teams for sports activities; purchase of a small van for College for routine marketing, banking etc; repairs to all staff quarters; in service training of Tutorial Staff with particular reference to commencement of English Medium; establishment of an Information Technology (IT) Unit.

COLLEGE IS 60 YEARS OLD THIS YEAR ON A DECISION OF THE EX-CO WE CELEBRATE THIS MILESTONE WITH A DINNER DANCE ON NOVEMBER 16,2002 AT THE SAPPHIRE BALLROOM OF CEYLON CONTINENTAL HOTEL IN COLOMBO. AS PREVIOUSLY FELLOWSHIP WILL DOMINATE. MEETING OLD FRIENDS, MAKING NEW ONES; STRENGTHENING THE BONDS BETWEEN GURU THOMIANS; SALUTING OUR MUCH LOVED SCHOOL. WE WILL LOUDLY LET THE ECHOES RING- ESTO PERPETUA! THE ADVERTISEMENTS IN THE SOUVENIR HAVE ALREADY ALMOST ACHIEVED THE TARGET OF RS.1,000,000/- TOWARDS THE COLLEGE DEVELOPMENT FUND. SO LETS GET TOGETHER WITH OUT GUESTS AND HAVE FUN, DANCE TO MUSIC AND ENJOY GOOD FOOD AND DRINK IN THE COMPANY OF FRIENDS. THUS WE SHALL CONTRIBUTE FUNDS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR ALMA MATER. The entire proceeds are being set apart for urgent work in connection with the development of College in the areas outlined above. Outright donations and contributions are also solicited and keep coming in.

It is also intended to put aside Rs.125,000/- each toward the Dr.R L Hayman and Fr.A J Foster Scholarship Funds. These Funds though established prior to 1996, have so far not been able to have regular scholarships awarded. It should be possible to make this a reality from the commencement of the new academic year 2002, if not sometime during the 3rd term of the academic year 2002. In order that a sufficient impetus be given to these awards, an Old Boy has arranged with the Headmaster for the award of three scholarships to the all-round students in the Primary, Middle and Senior Schools with immediate effect. The students are to be selected by the Headmaster in consultation with the Supervisors of each section. It is envisaged that the OBA will continue with these Awards.

The Senior Dorms have been completely renovated by a single Old Boy of our Group spending over a Million Rupees. We have also painted and repaired the Junior Dorms. We have supplied individual desks and chairs for 2 class rooms of the Upper 6th in the old class Room Block. We have also donated a large volume of books etc, for the library and equipment for Basket Ball, Life Saving and Swimming and also the Swimming Pool. Assistance to the farm and Accounts Department of the office have also been given. The Basketball Court has been rehabilitated. Work on the Squash Court is to commence this week. Arrangements are being made to set up the Diving Boards. An assessment of unutilized, and underutilized buildings and facilities is now going on; measures for the welfare of all the residents on the campus were executed. As such some work has been completed. Much more remains to be done.

Most of the Members of our Group had inquired months ago as to how they could help the College. They expressed the desire to share in expenses and make individual contributions. At that time we indicated to all of them that we would inform as to when such contributions could be made.

We NOW write to you to request you to be good enough to make whatever contribution you could make towards the development of College. What we had set out in the 10 Newsletters would have given you a clear picture of the abject situation which prevailed in College.
You could take an advertisement in the Souvenir which would cost you Rs.5000/- (US$ 53 or £ 34 or Aust$ 97, Ca$ 84), in the alternative, you could send a donation of such an amount or any other amount as you may see fit. All payments should be drawn in favour of "S.Thomas' College, Gurutalawa - OBA" and Crossed "A/c Payee only". If the cheques are transmitted to us we shall forward same to the Treasurer. An official receipt will be issued by the Treasurer promptly for all payments/contributions made. If you have already taken an Advertisement or made your donation/contribution please ignore this request but try to contact all of your college mates with whom you are in touch and pass on this message.

Please make it a point to attend the Dinner on November 16,2002. If you confirm, your ticket will be reserved. Tickets are selling out fast.
Please join with us to make the event the success it deserves to be, and help the College we love and to which we owe so much. Let us continue to be proud we are Guru Thomians.

With warm regards,"

CIRUCLAR OF 28TH FEBRUARY 2003

A letter on Re-Union Celebrations and AGM of February 23,2003
February 28,2003

Dear Member,
A short note to bring you up to date regarding the last AGM etc.
Those who were associated with our work last year were re-elected.

You have always been a strong supporter of the College and OBA and made very generous contributions towards improvement of College. I have no doubt all concerned will appreciate your commitment.

Development work which commenced under the last Ex-Co will be continued under the new Ex-Co. There is so much to be done and so little finances available. I only hope those responsible at College will preserve carefully the work done and material donations made, almost all of which have been inventorised by us in College.

It is a pathetic sight to see trees being cut to settle interest on overdrafts taken. The orchard too has been badly neglected over the years. The Outward Bound Track overgrown and abandoned. In fact I have made it possible for the Outward Bound Camps to start again provided the Headmaster does the balance paper work. I took those responsible to Gurutalawa.

The Subodhi Institute will also conduct a programme for students in Upper 6th in early March 2003. The present students are from a totally different background and 40% of them are said to be from broken or single parent homes. These are all factors to be taken in to account in drawing up a development programme in College. Unfortunately very little progress is being made if at all, and what the last Ex-Co has done is mere ornamental work and not solving the real problems. In order to do that the Bishop and Board of Governors must agree to give new direction and change the whole structure. Otherwise regaining the Hayman era or anything like that will be a pipe dream and the standards in School will gradually deteriorate however much the OBA tries to keep it afloat and College may eventually have to close down.
I have done what I could during the last year or so to revive the OBA. Towards this end I have spent more than Rs.1,662,945/-.

I have also during the last year done whatever I could towards improving many areas that required assistance and were crying out for help in College, eg Books and up todate Journals for the Library; teaching aids and material necessary for various subjects for the classrooms; CD's etc for Audio Visual teaching; individual desks and chairs for the classrooms; equipment for the Laboratory; tables and benches for the dining hall; complete refurbishment of the Winchester Dorm and the toilets; beds for the Winchester Dorm; complete repair of the pump and engine in the swimming pool cleaning plant; swimming pool cleaning equipment; swimming pool equipment; Ads in the dance souvenir for Rs.75,000/-; telephone system valued at over Rs.100,000/-; payment to Subodhi Institute; equipment for life saving and swimming; sports equipment for cricket, rugger, soccer, hockey, basket ball; badminton, squash, beginners tennis, carrom, musical entertainment for the entire school; scholarships for twelve students during the third term of 2002 and first term of 2003 etc, etc. all of which has cost me over Rs.466,301/-. Having done what I could I realize, compared to what Guru really needs now, my contribution has been like a drop in the ocean. I hope all will give their full support to the OBA and never allow it to become the "Old Boys Annual Picnic Club" it was until we took over. This will help the OBA to stand behind the Headmaster and try their best to save College. Because of the wise leadership we now have in the OBA it was possible to get the Bishop and the Board of Governors to agree to appoint an Administration Officer for College, answerable only to the Headmaster and over looking almost every subject other than studies at Guru. We have also put in an Old Boy of our era as Farm Manager when it was about to be closed down. The Administration Officer also will very likely be an Old Boy. These changes will perhaps keep the College afloat for sometime. Duleep mentioned that the post of Administrative Officer was something he had faught for, for over 25 years and given up in discussed. Clifford also had admitted that they had tried very hard without success. We were able to achieve this with some effort due to wise leaderships, great commitment, and tact.

Like at the last AGM this time too there were very few old boys who were senior to us, namely, Duleepkumar; Bandula Wanigasekera;Cecil Habaragoda;A M Zubair; Sanath Jayatilaka; B.Muna; Nanda Mathew, N L Fernando and Herbie Perera (from Germany).
Those of our vintage who participated were Sunil Watawala, Sarath Suraweera, Don Gazara (Formerly D C Kannangara), Neelendra Karunaratne, Sunil Prematilake, Sydney Abeykoon, E S R Fernando, Gamini Fernando, Wimalaraja, Nihal Wanniarachchi, Sundararajah, Anzary, Joe Rajakaruna.

A few of us were in Guru from Thursday morning attending to last minute details. One of our guys i.e Sunda was cleaning drains and busy with an Ekel Broom, sweeping the compound. The Headmaster had invited him to come at least once a month to repeat the performance. Hows Zat!!

A note of welcome signed by the Headmaster was handed over to each old boy by the Security at the main gate. Approximately 140 old boys were thus counted as having come in. This was to facilitate preparation of food.

The Dorms had notices indicating that Tickets @ 500/- were to be purchased (to off set the expenses of College for food etc, no change being made from last year's amount although we knew the food was going to be the best ever served at Guru); that the AGM was for members only; that enrolment was possible even up to the last minute; forms were available with the Secretary and at the College office; the meal times etc etc.

We had the cricket match, swimming meet and basket ball matches and a squash encounter between two Old Boys- the looser to pay Rs.10,000/- towards squash at College. Trophies donated by me were awarded to the best Batsman & Best Bowler. Despite all arrangements being made weeks before, the students who were to participate in these sporting events i.e the College Teams had been permitted to go home. They had obviously not been informed or given the impression that the event was not important enough for them to stay back. As you are probably aware, now the week-end of the Old Boys Re-Union celebrations is a compulsory mid-term holiday for the entire school for the past decade or two. This is something I wanted to change and have tactfully had partial success with. Hardly any members of the staff were available and one Master rustled up their "C" teams to oppose the Old Boys. This was an insult to the OBA. The Headmaster was present at the Cricket Match. The Headmaster admitted that he had made a mistake in allowing the Students in the teams to go home.

I arranged to have films done by Dr.Hayman exhibited in Foster Hall for those arriving on Friday night, starting around 7.30 p.m. Almost all 45 Old Boys who had arrived by that time thoroughly enjoyed the film show, mostly those of Yala, Wilpattu, Outward Bound Camps and Old Boys Re-Union celebrations of the period 1959-1962. Some Senior Old Boys like Duleepkumar and Sisira Nanayakkara were easily made out apart from Mara, Oliver Soysa, Lafir, Nawaz and a few others. The Headmaster did not attend this event. Had he done so he would have seen the entire school i.e 300 students at the College grounds witnessing the cricket and hockey matches and refreshments being served by courtesy of Van Simon and the College Van. This time and now a days not a single student is there to witness or participate in the celebrations other than those playing and that too not the College Teams. Perhaps the "Spirits" of the 60's would not have been as "potent" as those available now or is it because the crowd of Old Boys who visited Guru from 1959-1963 or so were of a different culture, perhaps well bred, compared to some of those who go to Guru now. Otherwise why send the boys away when old boys visit Guru.
We had the Fellowship in the quadrangle like a "Cocktail Party" with light music (initial stages) provided by a D J who I sponsored from Colombo. The Headmaster was not present. We sent our Secretary to his bungalow and requested him to come. He made an appearance for a while.

The Older Old Boys of course were very impressed and complimented us on the organization. Our request that old boys should attend the Fellowship and dinner properly dressed was respected by a fair number. The younger ones of course behaved in the same way they did at the Dinner Dance. One was dressed in shorts for the Fellowship and Dinner. There was enough spirits and bites to go round.
Grace was said by the Chaplain and all those present sat down to dinner together - a departure from the "bath kade" practice of the last several years. I saw a prominent Old Boy of the previous Ex-Co's kitchen cabinet smoking whilst the College song was being sung. This is recorded even on video.

A sound system was available and the after dinner speeches too were made to be audible to all, although Mr.Upali Gunaratne, a former P A, M.P who responded from amongst the old boys concentrated on praising the Headmaster who had taught him while in College. In fact one interesting anecdote he mentioned was that the Headmaster hated to cane anybody and on one occasion, he had to cane the whole class. Having done that, he had returned to his quarters and had been crying!!. Guru today is in such a mess. The Headmaster who is expected to turn it around has to be a tough guy. The Headmaster has admitted he cannot handle the situation at Guru and he himself is eagerly waiting for the Administration Officer to come in and take over almost all his functions. As you know, the Headmaster does not take classes or any sports activity.

The food served for all meals from Friday Dinner till Sunday lunch saw a huge improvement both in quality and quantity. In addition to the usual Pol Sambol and Fried Egg and other traditional Thomian Fare, we had prepared Ambul Thiyal in Colombo and taken it up to Guru, both Beef and Chicken were served with almost all meals in addition to unlimited Eggs for those who wanted to have a "go" in the absence of restricted diets by nagging wives at home. There was also Strings and Milk Rice which had not been served for over a decade. Every meal had caramel or Wattalapan or Ice Cream plus Pine and Plantains. Salads were also made part of the meal. Last year we had witnessed an Old Boy compelled to eat Rice with only tempered beans. There was nothing else. The Minor Staff had finished eating and a good part of the food prepared for Old Boys had by that time been spirited away to the Village. Precautions were taken to prevent this wholesale "theft" this time. The charges levied for the Re-Union week end remained at Rs.500/. There was a young old boy who when requested to purchase a ticket of Rs.500/- responded that he did not have the money as he had only Rs.60/- in his pocket to get back to Balangoda!!!. This is the crowd that has been coming to College for the past several years and enjoying free accommodation, food, use of the swimming pool etc, etc for a week-end of fun totally uninterested in College and departing thanks to the generosity of the OBA to all and sundry or bad organisation. We eliminated this obnoxious practice this time. All were made to pay.

We were determined that non members should not be participants at the Annual General Meeting. By having an Attendance Register to be signed at the Registration Desk at the entrance to Foster Hall this problem was clinically and effectively solved. With the result almost 25 old boys who have been habitually getting away with this, enrolled half-an-hour before the AGM!!!. This brings the total enrolled during the year to almost 125. This is a phenomenal record. Last year when sheets of paper were passed round to mark attendance during the meeting there were over 60 old boys who were non members who had signed. Quite a few sheets never came back to the Head Table. Some Old Boys signed several times. All this was eliminated. Sanity was restored.

Previously sub committees were appointed for membership drives. There was no drive. No report. In fact more members were going out of circulation without a trace. We have increased the mailing list from 400 to almost 700. Sub committees had also been appointed to draw up new rules. New rules never saw the light of day. This year the sub-committee sat and worked hard and new Rules were adopted at the AGM. The Hayman and Foster Scholarships had not been awarded for years. We revived them. Membership Cards were reintroduced. Newsletters and a Members Directory were initiated. The record was electrifying. The Mount OBA with over 500 members is looking at us with envy. Who has done all this.

The Meeting itself went on OK. Duleep guided most of the meeting. Unfortunately, during the Meeting the matter of the Thomian Walk was raised and this opened a very sore point. We had all participated in the Thomian Walk as we were made to understand that a part of the proceeds were coming to Guru. This did not happen. I raised this matter in the Newsletters and at the Ex-Co. We wrote to the previous Secretary and sent several reminders. He responded only months later, in late December and that too in language which was couched in very vague terms. But simultaneously, he had sent his personal cheque for Rs.30,000/- to the Headmaster direct without disclosing to us what he had done, and done so late in the day, as to when he received the payment from Mount and the way the amount had been calculated, the total amount collected by Mout etc, etc. Unfortunately, for him, the Headmaster spilt the beans at the Ex-Co Meeting on January 11,2003. So this raised a host of new questions. Sanath Jayatilaka raised this matter at the AGM and said that it was obligatory on the part of the Ex-Co to get to the bottom of it and not try to cover up if the Secretary had been guilty of any wrong conduct. In Mt.Lavinia it would appear, efforts are being made to cover up. I mentioned that there was absolutely no record in the Minute books, as regards the arrangements or understanding under which we participated in the walk, the proportion of percentage of the collection due to us. Not a single letter or file was handed over by the previous Secretary. In the circumstances, it became all the more necessary to find out what really had happened. Otherwise this type of thing will continue and people will get away with anything. When these discussions were going on the members who were close to the last Ex-Co and some who composed of the last Ex-Co and who were seated in the last three rows may have found it embarrassing. Nobody spoke in defense of the last Secretary, although Members of the last Ex-Co were present including a Vice President who may have been able to throw some light on the subject and helped the House. Perhaps it was too hot. None of them were able to enlighten the house of what really had happened. They just slipped away. It was in poor taste. Apart from this incident, everything went off fine.

I had made it known to those that mattered that with the AGM I will be taking a back seat and it was left for others to go on with the good work. I have refused to come in for any Ex-Co or any other "core members" meetings or discussions etc. I have made it clear however that I am available at my office if the Secy wants to discuss any matter.

Lucian Fernando (Munda) too had sent a note of excuse. His presence undoubtly would have enlivened the dinner and the AGM. Clifford Ratwatte the former Senior Vice President did not come and there was no excuse offered. The general view is that the record of work of the Ex-Co during 2002-2003 is phenomenal and all critics have been effectively silenced, particularly those who blamed us for forming a group which will undermind the Ex-Co and disintegrate the OBA. On the contrary the OBA is stronger than ever before. The pundits have been silenced.

Your support in the several ways received by the last Ex-Co will not be forgotten. We must all be available to help the OBA and through it the College.

The celebrations on the whole were conducted in a cordial atmosphere. Even 2 or 3 main individuals who were strong supporters of the last Ex-Co approached me and complimented me not only on the arrangements for the celebrations but also admitting the fact that during our year we had done an enormous amount of work and much more than they had done during the last several years. Coming from them I was quite happy that they had the decency to admit it, unlike some very senior old boys.

All the events from Friday afternoon until the conclusion of the AGM were filmed by a video camaraman sponsored by me.
Incidentally some of Dr.Hayman's films which were in a good state were copied on to video by this guy, at Guru, and I will in co-ordination with the Headmaster relay to the OBA the proposal of a new member who is interested in copying this on to video cassettes or CD's so that the OBA could perhaps sell it to interested Old Boys and collect some funds.

Before the Meeting commenced I handed over all the Books, Registers, and Files etc, to the outgoing Secretary. At the conclusion of the Meeting the outgoing Secretary was made to hand over all the Records and Files my office had maintained from 02.03.2002 to 23.03.2003 and a receipt obtained to be tabled at the first Meeting of the new Ex-Co. There was a record of over 6,000 copies of letters/communications sent out by the Secretary in the Outgoing letters file. So you can imagine the amount of time, energy, money and commitment that went in to the work of the Secretariat from March 02,2002 till February 23,2003.

Realizing that there was no valid reason why the 300 or so boarders did not sit for meals at the same time, I discussed the matter with the Headmaster. It appeared a few more tables were necessary. At my expense, I got 8 tables and 16 benches turned out in time for the Re-Union week end. I told the Headmaster to make an announcement on Thursday at dinner and have the whole school sit for breakfast on Friday morning at one sitting for the first time after almost 2 decades. At this point the Headmaster says "I don't know whether there are enough plates" Had he mentioned that in advance I would have had the plates delivered on time. I have patiently worked with him to accomplish some good for Guru without advertising anything and seeking office but being in the background helping College and the OBA.
Heres hoping Guru will be strong again.

With my warm regards,"
